Has anyone ever heard of "Irish Travelers"? They are allegedly engaging in a driveway paving scam around the country. According to this article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, "Irish Travelers, also known as Tinkers, are a close-knit society similar to, but unrelated to, gypsies. They are known throughout the world for moving from city to city pulling home-improvement scams, often targeting the elderly."

Known throughout the world??? That's news to me. There are supposedly 30,000 or so just in the U.S. Anyone ever heard of them?

Scam artists may be working area, FBI says

By Torsten Ove, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Today's culturally sensitive Justice Department can't use the name officially, but FBI agents in Washington are hunting for Irish Traveler scam artists at work in Pittsburgh and other eastern cities.

These itinerant rip-off artists, described in an official bulletin only as "caucasians known to speak with an Irish accent," are operating a driveway paving scam.

It's simple: They post fliers in your neighborhood saying they're bonded and experienced, then do lousy or incomplete work and disappear with your money.

When you try to get your money back, you find their phone number disconnected and their business address doesn't exist.

"Homeowners have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result of these paving scams," said the FBI.

Victims of the scam or anyone with information about it are asked to call the FBI's toll-free number, 1-888-324-9800.

Jeff Killeen, local FBI spokesman, said he didn't know any specifics about victims in the Pittsburgh area, but the FBI in Washington believes the scammers are here or have been here recently.

"There are indications that they have been in this area," he said.

Debbie Weierman, spokesman for the Washington office, said the FBI has also issued bulletins for Washington, Chicago, Boston, Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Richmond.

The agency issued a similar warning last year for Virginia and Maryland.

Typically, the pavers perform work that looks OK at first. But usually, they've applied such a thin layer of asphalt that it starts to crumble in a few months, and by that time the contractors are long gone. Sometimes they get paid up front and disappear after starting work.

Either way, it's a high-volume business, since most homeowners lose a few hundred dollars.

Irish Travelers, also known as Tinkers, are a close-knit society similar to, but unrelated to, gypsies. They are known throughout the world for moving from city to city pulling home-improvement scams, often targeting the elderly.

They trace their roots in America to the Irish potato famine of the 1840s, when many Irish came to the U.S. with few prospects and settled mostly in South Carolina and Georgia.

Since then, they've branched out across the country, usually living in mobile homes. Some estimates put their number at 30,000.

Traveler rings have been known to pull shoplifting scams or low-level fraud, but they seem to focus mainly on barn-painting, roofing and paving schemes.

In California and other western states, they have been known to offer roof coatings with special compounds to stop leaks or sunlight-reflecting substances for mobile homes to keep them cooler. In reality, Travelers don't do much labor beyond tramping around on the roof.

Yes the Guy Ritchie movie Snatch had them. Unlike the English gypsies(they are largely indo-aryan) they are ethnic Irish vagabonds. I think they are probably people that followed herds in ancient times.

Yes.

A few years ago an Irish Traveller was in the news for beating her 4 year old child and it was caught on tape.

Generally these people are more of a nusiance then anything, they try all sorts of home improvment scams just like in the Article you posted. They don't really try and rob people or do other worse stuff like the Eastern European Gypsies that are more well known.

I believe that the recent call by the Irish Prime Minister for an Irish Amnesty similar to the Mexican Amnesty movement is for the Irish Travellers (maybe they don't want them coming back to Ireland?)

Ireland asks Bush for alien amnesty

Heard of them, heard them, seen them, met them. They have numerous scams and wouldn't won't earn an honest days pay if you offered it to them. Driveways is the most famous scam. They will tarmac your driveway with no hard-core foundation and put about half an inch of tarmac down. The driveway crumbles away a few weeks later, or the first time you drive a car onto it!
By then the're gone.

Sounds like 90% of the work done by Mexicans where I live. But they work for the city, so it's ok.

The "Irish Travelers" are such a nuisance, it seems. There are 30,000 of them! I feel much better knowing that the FBI is on the case. Once they are done rounding up the Irish, I hope the President assigns them to rounding up the hundred of thousands of "Mexican immigrants," who are engaged in gang-rape, robbery, and drug trafficking. After all, getting a piss-poor job done on your driveway is much worse than having your daughter raped on the way to school!

I recall an independant movie being made about Irish travellers in the states. Something about them being on the grift. At this point these travellers are Americans with US accents. They just have the habits of the old country. Also they are badly discriminated against Ireland. Many are on welfare and scam too to survive.

I'm from Northern Ireland and know of Travelers - everyone just calls them gypsies. They tend to live in caravans in fields which they make one hell of a mess of. Few lived anywhere near where I'm from but my ex-work colleagues who do, despise them. They've a reputation for having children at very young ages, lack of cleanliness, scamming, and general criminality.

It's been said that soccer player Roy Keane, former Man United captain and Irish Republic international, is one.Edited by: Matra1

I strongly reccomend the book, Fitzpatrick's War. It features an Irish traveler girl living in post apocalyptic America.

Anyways, the Irish Travelers are going to get more and more publicity because they are white con artists. There are probably a lot more scams coming from other ethnicities.

The greatest gift to a writer is an interesting white criminal. This doesn't mean facts prevail. In the movie 'Traveler' gypsies (of Asian Indian origin) murder a white traveler who has outwitted them. During the con the two groups were able to communicate in a common 'gypsy' language.

Couldn't happen as gypsies speak Rom and travelers speak Cant. They avoid each other and avoid violence. They run very different cons.

Perhaps the most telling thing about gypsies in the U.S. is they prey upon the elderly. First they 'befriend' them and then wipe them out (be very worried if an elderly relative has a new best friend or paramour of mysterious ethnic origin). Mostly gypsy women and children do this as the men seldom work. Most gypsies are illiterate as this binds them to the group. Despite their cons they are usually poor and often die in their forties due to drink, food and drugs. A penniless gypsy will be described as a very wealthy man. Why? Because he spent a million dollars.

Some parts of white traveler life in the movie are accurate. Some clans return home every year for the World Series. They do like trailers, living in them (though some live in million dollar homes) and making a market in them. The short con prevails as it produces less anger and low bail.

Traveler men who are good earners, and thus have proven good genetics ('good blood'), can command dowaries of up to $500,000.

Travelers can read people better than anyone. They have to.

Gypsies hate frogs. Gypsies will go into a store, break something, and demand a lower price (netting a vast five dollars at a time, just for practice). Gypsies do not believe running away is cowardice, but rather staying to get hurt or killed is cowardice born of pride. Gypsy women play a game with their children to teach them not to show fear or flinch. They start by gently hitting the child and work up to some pretty hard slaps across the face. Gypsies will claim racial discrimination if it works. Gypsies will be American Indians during a street corner con collecting for poor Indians. Gypsies will be Mexicans when conning Mexicans. Gypsies will be white when convenient. Gypsy lives are ruled by a fear of tabboo (which strongly echos India). Breaking a tabboo can even result in expulsion from the group.

Travelers seem human by comparison. Many of the most clever cons were first perfected by travelers such as the Home Depot return/debit card con.

Official attitudes toward the two groups differ. Gypsies would leave their lives of crime provided they learned to read and were simply understood by the racist outside world. Travelers are subjects of envy as they save their money and lead very circumspect lives outside of thievery by wit.

The love of gypsies, poor oppressed minority, is exemplified by a study devoted to gypsies conducted at great expense by Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. Why, oh why, do they die so young?

Virtually every dramatic and warmedy (warm family oriented comedy) television series has had or will have a racsim/skinhead/antisemitism/horridbigotry epsisode. And every crime/forensic series has had or will have a Traveler themed epsisode. Even Hawaii 5-O had a Traveler episode mentioning the real-life Williams clan.

Speaking of cons. Remember the ads for Enzyte? Free samples of penis enhancement pills? Guy with a big smile and a very happy wife?

That was a $100 million scam. People called in and gave their credit card info to get the 'free' samples. A certain Steven WARSHAK would then make unauthorized charges against the accounts.

Credit card companies will yank merchant accounts if there are too many disputed charges, 1% of total charges is the usual threshhold. To keep below 1% Mr. WARSHAK would bill his own credit card accounts a huge number of $1 charges.

$100 million. One guy named WARSHAK. Will the FBI issue a warning about similar threats?

A DRIVEWAY PAVING SCAM?!?!??!?!

Ye Gods!

That's MUCH worse than the actions of certain minority groups, who commit violent crime at a rate 14 times that of Whites, or who commit the overwhelming majority of interacial attacks against Whites.

Really the only legitimate gypsies I have seen are gypsies that have been involved in the boxing business. In England the Asian gypsies have been involved in boxing for years. When Zelko Marovich challenged Lennox Lewis his head trainer was a British gypsy. Also many British gypsy's have won domestic British belts.Edited by: white is right
