Urging that the German team be made up of actual Germans is now a prosecutable offense in Germany...

Germany's soccer federation denounced "racist campaigns" against national team players Monday ahead of a trial in which officials from the country's leading far-right party are accused of racial incitement and defamation.

National Democratic Party leader Udo Voigt and two other party leaders are to appear in a Berlin district court Tuesday on charges linked to a pamphlet circulated before the 2006 World Cup.

Prosecutors maintain that the document implied Patrick Owomoyelaâ€â€￾born of a German mother and a Nigerian fatherâ€â€￾was not worthy to play for Germany.

The flier showed the German team's traditional white jersey imprinted with the No. 25â€â€￾worn at the time by Owomoyelaâ€â€￾over the title: "White, not just a jersey color! For a real NATIONAL team!"

Owomoyela and the soccer federation filed a lawsuit against the party. In a statement Monday, the federation said it wanted to fight "the racist campaigns against players for the German national team."

Prosecutors have charged Voigt and two others responsible for printing the leaflets with two counts of racial incitement and one of defamation. If convicted, the three could each face a fine or up to three years in prison.

Wow I just posted a comment on this. The nationality of a team should represent the historical majority of a country by at least 50% ancestry. No exceptions. Hee should compete for the country his roots are from.

I'm divided on how America should do it though.

The article says his mother was german though. Should we make it patriarchal ancestry, if tthe 50% rule is too leniant? Edited by: StarWars

They have to stop immigration from 3rd world countries. You are going to have minorities being born in Germany now if you let these immigrants in.
There was an architectural critic who wrote a book on cities and he said European cities just don't have the feeling of menace that the US cities have. We know why that is. I hope it doesn't change.

The US also has or had many foreign born players on the National Team: Reyna, Adu, Feilhaber.
The National Teams are getting to be a joke with all the Brazilians on teams now.
England's U-21's are playing France's u-21's next week. I bet at least half the players will be black.
There are 2 black players on Switzerland of all places. How come they get to live there? I wouldn't mind living there. They would rather let minorities in. Could you imagine Switzerland 20 or 30% black? I mean the country not the team.

I've been to Switzerland and it is a beautiful and clean country. Although I like German food better, the carefree atmosphere I felt in Switzerland was amazing, and with immigrants I fear it could lose its charm. The typical chain of events is the first generation immigrants being hard-working and nice, and then their children having a sense of entitlement and turning into thugs. I doubt Switzerland will be filled with too many of them though, considering the country has one love: money.

As for competing for a country I definitely think that 50% of the ancestry should be required, and if 50% exactly it should be patriarchal for male athletes and matriarchal for female athletes.

What do you mean by 50%? One of parents. What if say and Italian moves to Spain and has a child in Spain. The child never lives in Italy. Should he be able to play for Italy? I don't like being able to play for 2 or 3 different countries. I don't think so.

Maybe you should have an option to declare one country at birth to compete and be a citizen of, and use the 50% rule as eligibility to register.

I think that you should be able to immigrate to a country if you can trace your roots there, but you shouldn't be able to compete for the new country's team unless you are at least 50% that nationality with a parent from that country and you declare that is the country you want to compete for at a young age or birth.

It's OK if the person was born and raised there. But, if he was born elsewhere, and raised there, then we got ourselves a serious dilemma.

I applaud the right-wing party for standing their ground.

Yes, at the least you should have to grow up in the country you compete for. But what happens when third world country athletes and others are born and raised in England andare on their olympic team. Then no longer do the athletes represent England, but just England's randomly assorted team. I think it defeats the purpose of the olympics, help for fun in exclaiming national pride of their own athletes. America should be the only exception, along with colonies or countries without a deep history or a history of immigration.

yes, It's like Freddie Adu who was born in Africa and now represents the US.He really has nothing in common with me, but I am supposed to cheer for him anyway.

Exactly. What reason do I have to chear for someone reaping the benefits of hard working americans of all races? He wasn't even born or rased here. That should be the bare minimum.

Well, regardless of whether the Germans maintain their racial identity or not, it's "nice" to see them at least maintaining their totalitarian tendencies of stamping out free speech and crushing under the jackboot anyone who chooses to voice dissent.

I never imagine that Hitler's image would get a face lift. As vile as history depicts the man, he might be the very symbol and inspiration for the white race to survive.

He only hadwhite pride because his country was left in ruins in WWI, and was trying to lift their spirits. Although white pride is good, he was a fascist and may represent the communist Nation America may become. I like his pride, but his beliefs are a little screwed up in the head.

Sadly though, you ma be right about him being our only figure of support because he is as close as it gets to white pride lately because most whites are self loathing.

I wish we had a more noble leader for our cause.Edited by: StarWars

These occasional offerings of respect for Hiltler on this site make me feel sick. The man was a ruthless murderer and madman and was a disaster for the German people (who paid the heaviest price for his madness) and for the whole of Europe.
Getting back to the point of the thread what gets me about the right to represent your country is this new thing called "residency" that is creeping into Soccer and Rugby. Once you have lived in England or Wales or Scotland for a number of years (5 I think) people are being allowed to represent the country. This is crazy.

I said that sadly he may be as close as we can get to a proud leader, but is still a fascist pig. J41181 said history depicts him badly, but I disagree with him. I believe he was depicted as a murderer, which is an apt depiction. He is not my image to look up to, but an example of the way our society could become if our extreme leftists had their way.

But I don't want to speak for J41181, maybe he was being sarcastic or something.Edited by: StarWars

I agree. You have guys like Almunia and Arteta from Spain who are thinking about playing for England. I don't even know if they should be playing in the English league. There should be a minimun 6-5 rule and I would consider a 9-2 rule. And that's including within EU countries. In the best of worlds it could be 11-0 with minimal immigration into countries, especially form non EU and Muslim countries. I am tired of Brazilians playing on various national teams. Some people in the US want Emelio, a Brazilian, to play for the US. I don't.

I'm amazed how many dual citizen players there are in sports, especially in soccer. Very little room for home-grown talents, most especially in many countries in Europe. They should really limit the number of foreign players in these professional leagues and national teams. I would go with the 9-2 or 11-0 you have mentioned. Some thing needs to be done.

And forget about what I said about Hitler, I was being sarcastic.

I agree and disagree on this topic. I think naturalized citizens is a joke. If you are born of a certain blood, you should you are always of that blood and should take pride in it, instead of disowning it and moving to another country for a better athletic opportunity. However, with athletes of dual citizenship (50/50) you should be given a choice. I know most countries require individuals to make a decision at 18 where they want their citizenship to be, and this should hold true for athletes as well. If one is brought up in or starts his international career in Germany before he is 18, he should continue on in that country. If he is part of the Nigerian youth national team in any way, he should not be allowed to switch course mid way.

I like that argument a lot. Very realistic and it still somewhat maintains the integrity of representing your own blood.

Most European countries and the US allow dual citizenship for people which I can't stand. They have more choices than people like me.Somebody like Jonathon Specter of the US national team was able to get an EU passport because of family. Therefore, he was able to go to the Manchester United Academy and take the place of a British player because of this ,even though he wasn't born in Europe, let alone England. He was also able to play in England even though he wasn't a full national team member. The problem is there is way too much immigration going on. In 20-30 years European national teams won't even be European anymore. You will also have a ton of Polish people playing on various national teams. It will be meaningless.
Owen Hargreaves really should only be allowed to play for Canada where he was born. He went to Germany at 16 to play at Bayern Munich. He could have played for Canada,England, Wales or Germany. It's a joke.

With mass migration national teams are going the same way as club teams went decades back. There was a time (a long time ago!) when everyone who played for liverpool was from liverpool, and that was the case for all the teams! Then people started moving more between towns, the population became more mobile, and someone from London could easily end up playing for Liverpool. No longer was there a pure Liverpool team. A shame, but a fact could not be changed.

The world is now even more mobile then ever, and this, in the same way as it did with club teams, is going to be reflected in the changing face of national teams over the next few generations. Its unavoidable that players whose last name ends in 'ski' could be playing for any European team in the next few decades. This global mobilisation is not going to stop, and it is happening everywhere...not just in western countries Polish people are moving to England, Ukranians are moving to Poland, Georgians are moving to Ukraine etc -all in search of better opportunities.

Personally, like you guys, i think in many ways its a shame that things are going the way that they are (as discussed on this thread) but with global society as it is now, theres not much point resisting it. Like the club teams before hand, its just a plain fact.

But it's a one way street. Nobody in the US wants to move to Mexico, unless you are insane.Mexico is colonizing the US without a shot. How many English or French or Swedes want to move to Poland. If I were from Western Europe I might be able to accept free movement of people between Western European countries because they have similar standards of living and are closer culturally. They had ties during the cold war also. People only move to more attractive places to live generally. I hate how Canadians think they are the 51st state. Are you telling me that nobody in America can host Jeopardy other than a Canadian?
