Fan to sue Davis, wife for more than $1 million

The Associated Press
Published January 19, 2006, 2:57 PM CST

As New York Knicks forward Antonio Davis awaited word Thursday on whether he will be suspended for climbing into the stands to confront a man during a game in Chicago, that fan said he did nothing wrong and was attacked by Davis' wife.

The altercation came in overtime Wednesday night of the Bulls' 106-104 victory. Davis said he thought his wife was in danger and later released a statement saying the fan was drunk.

"It's a lie," 22-year-old Michael Axelrod said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Unlike last season's melee when Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons and fans were involved in perhaps the worst brawl in U.S. sports history, order was quickly restored. No punches were thrown, there were no arrests and Davis was ejected.

The Knicks were home Thursday night against Detroit. An NBA spokesman said decisions on penalties are usually made before a team plays its next game.

Davis, president of the NBA players' association, jumped over the scorer's table to get in the stands at the United Center.

"I witnessed my wife being threatened by a man that I learned later to be intoxicated," he said in a statement after the game. "I saw him touch her, and I know I should not have acted the way I did, but I would have felt terrible if I didn't react. There was no time to call security. It happened too quickly."

But Axelrod said Kendra Davis tried to scratch him after he protested a call. Axelrod said he never laid a hand on Davis' wife and said he was not drunk.

Axelrod's father, David, is a prominent Democratic political consultant in Chicago who has worked with Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley.

"When I go to games, I cheer as hard as I can for the Bulls, and I boo as hard as I can for whoever they're playing," Michael Axelrod said. "I don't feel comfortable if players are allowed to easily jump into the crowd whenever they feel like it's necessary."

Axelrod's attorney, Jay Paul Deratany, said he planned to sue Davis and his wife for more than $1 million. Deratany said he was writing the papers Thursday for a battery suit against Kendra Davis and a slander case against Antonio Davis, and planned to file them Friday.

According to Axelrod, he was sitting in the seventh row and booed an official's call. Kendra Davis "came out of her seat. I didn't even pay attention to her. I thought she was just going to the bathroom or something," he said.

Axelrod, who was sitting a couple of rows behind her, said she yelled at him to be quiet. Axelrod said he did not know she was Davis' wife until the player ran into the stands.

Axelrod said Kendra Davis put both hands on his face, and that he motioned for security. He said she later went after another fan.

"I was glad she was done hitting me, but I didn't want her to hit anyone else," Axelrod said.

Antonio Davis appeared calm throughout and walked away willingly when security arrived. He returned to the bench and took his seat before being ejected. The game resumed after about a five-minute delay.

Axelrod was escorted to the concourse by security, but said he was allowed back into the arena and saw Ben Gordon's winning shot at the buzzer.

"His wife and kids were up there," Knicks guard Jamal Crawford said. "If you see your family in harm's way, you're going to go protect them. You're the man of the house, and at that point you're thinking like a regular human instead of an athlete."

United Center security remained in the stands for a few more minutes, and other fans appeared to be explaining what they had seen. Guards in suits and yellow jackets then escorted a group of people from the area.

Knicks coach Larry Brown said Davis went into the stands because he saw his wife "falling back."

Brown was coaching the Pistons in November 2004 when that ugly fight broke out in the stands between fans and Pacers during a Detroit home game. An embarrassment for the NBA, the brawl led to criminal charges and lengthy suspensions for Ron Artest, Jermaine O'Neal and Stephen Jackson.

But Brown was adamant that this situation should be viewed differently.

"Come on, that's his wife," Brown said. "That's entirely different. I was worried about Kendra. That's why he went in the stands, he saw her falling back.

"That thing that happened in the stands had nothing to do with the two teams. That's a man concerned about his family."

From NY Daily News in November:

Married to the job: The Raptors' Antonio Davis apologized for confronting
the Toronto Star's Dave Perkins earlier this week after the columnist
quoted Davis' wife, Kendra, as saying that her husband wanted to be
traded.

"Keep my --- wife's name out of your column," Davis told Perkins. "She's
not part of this team."

Coincidentally, Kendra Davis engaged in a brief shouting match with
Latrell Sprewell after Sprewell made a basket during Game 3 of a playoff
series between the Knicks and Raptors two years ago. Sprewell was
unaware that the heckler was Davis' wife.

I doubt it will take much effort to show that the Family Davis are nothing but a pack of typical blacks, i.e. easily enraged, quick to violence, with an adrenalalized "shoot-first" attitude. This episode demonstrates why these these creatures are so dangerous.

As a police officer once said: "You don't know what they're going to do because THEY don't know what they're going to do."

Every jock-sniffer in the media that I have heard comment about this
incident takes the exact same spin; "look, that was his wife, and a man
has to protect his family." Since the reaction by the kept press has
been 100% sympathetic to this ignorant multi- millionaire, I'm going to
take a wild guess that the fan in question is white. Of course,
that may be common knowledge to many here, if video of the incident has
been shown on ESPN (I haven't watched any sports "highlights" other
than for fantasy football purposes for quite awhile). I wish the fan
luck in his lawsuit, but it's unlikely he'll get anything other than a
much smaller out-of-court settlement.

Account from Deadspin.com :

I'm an ex-New Yorker living in Chicago and I was at the Bulls game last
night. I wanted to share a different perspective on what happened
because what is being reported is not at all accurate. I was sitting less
than 10 feet from Kendra Davis and saw the whole thing.

The section of seats is filled with longtime season ticketholders so there
are no "troublemakers" who sit there. Given that it was Eddy Curry's first
game back in Chicago since being traded, most of the seats in the section
were filled by the ticketholders themselves.

Throughout the game, Kendra was making a spectacle of herself. She'd
stand up during the game and yell to her friends sitting behind her. The
only alcohol I saw consumed in the section all night was by members of
her group.

When the game went into overtime, the intensity obviously increased. A
fan (the balding fellow mentioned in Jay Mariotti's column today) who was
sitting two rows directly behind her, was rooting loudly for the Bulls. He
did not say anything offensive. He did not swear. He was just rooting for
the Bulls. It appeared that Kendra didn't like it that someone was rooting
against her husband. She got up and went to the guy's seat (he remained
seated the whole time) and started waving her hands in his face. She kept
telling him to "calm down" and "relax," and the guy kept telling her to get
away from him. He was not at all confrontational. She called a member of
the Bulls security staff over and told him what had happened from her
perspective. He did nothing to discipline the fan since he apparently did
nothing wrong.

At that point, another fan sitting nearby asked her to sit down because
she was obstructing his view of the game. She immediately ran over and
started screaming at him, repeatedly sticking her finger in his face. He
asked her to stop sticking her finger in his face, but she continued to do
it and he grabbed her finger to defend himself because he didn't not
know what her intentions were. As he held her finger, she lunged at him
with her other hand, and he grabbed that one to protect himself. He
pushed her hands away from him, and at that point Antonio Davis arrived
at his seat. There was a Bulls security person who restrained him from
going after the fan. Davis was then escorted back down to the court.

Security talked to a number of people and quickly determined that Kendra
Davis was at fault. She and her kids were escorted from the section. The
balding fellow left his seat for a short time to give his statement and
returned to his seat a short time later. Nobody was ejected, nobody was
arrested.

From the stories I've read, this is not the first time she has gotten in
trouble at a game (the argument with Latrell Sprewell). One of the other
fans sitting in the section was from Naperville, where Davis lived while
playing with the Bulls and his\ son played Little League baseball with
Antonio Jr. (Davis' son). He said that she was constantly making a
spectacle of herself and would routinely getting into arguments with
other fans and families.

I hope you'll get this side of the story out. People should know the truth
about what happened.

My initial reaction was a man has a right to protect his wife...but thanks for the truth Great lake state..Mrs davis sounds like the real idiot here and her husband maybe is one of those &*%$# whipped guys if you know what I mean. I heard from the espn crew last night that Mrs. Davis runs the show and is the boss in her household.

GreatLakeState,

Thanks for the very informative post. I'm sure we'll never hear
anything like it in the mainstream media. It's just a crying shame that
our country is in such sad shape that our pathetic "free" press can't
even tell the truth about something as insignificant as an altercation
at a sporting event.

It's amazing how many times the so-called "free" press forgets to report the truth. No way that happens in a truly competitive market.

I heard this guy interviewed by Dan Patrick on the radio today. The woman was out of control by anyone that bothered to do a little investigating. All this guy wants is an apology from Davis and a small donation (1,000-2,000 dollars) to the charity of his choice. He wants his name cleared of any wrong doing.

He will never get the apology. Blacks just don't do that. Especially when they are wrong.

Well said! I only saw a few moments of the video, where he runs across the floor and jumps onto the scorers table. He very easily could have injured someone or caused a fracas. Not surprisingly all the black analysts sympathised with him.

I don't know if anyone here feels the same way, but from what I've hard the only person really to blame here is Mrs. Davis. If indeed SHE is the one who started the whole thing with the fan then obviously the fan has no fault in the matter. And while I don't thinkthat Davis should have entered the stands I CAN kind of see where he is coming from: all he saw was a confrontation between involving his wife and right or wrong he went over to see what was going on...it wasn't as though he went up there looking like he wanted a fight...Mrs. Davis does come off as a bit of an idiot though.

We can all see where Mr.Davis is coming from as he is not the man to blame. Though unfortunatly his wife is the one to blame as she's tyhe one who started the whole thing. What a bitch!

This incident also reinforces yet another negative stereotype about
blacks; the propensity that females have for getting into physical
confrontations. There was another recent example of this when Redskins
RB Clinton Portis' mother got into a physical altercation with some
fans in the stands at a Redskins' game. Whose mother gets into a
physical brawl at a public event? Whose wife has a habit of confronting
strangers physically, as Kendra Davis does? I can't think of a single
white female I've ever known who would get into such a ridiculous
situation. Certainly there are lots of "white trash" females who mimic
this uncouth behavior, but no woman (or man) with class, maturity and
any intelligence goes to a sporting event and allows themselves to
become engaged in a fight. Yet we have all these idiotic, wimpy white
"journalists" who continue to defend this kind of childish thuggery, as
if they can understand it. Yeah, I'm sure a lot of the boys on ESPN
have had to jump into physical disputes involving their mothers and
wives.

In any case,I don't believe that Michael Axelrod will get punished, because he is

1)The son of David Axelrod, famous music producer of the '60s &amp; '70s,and major</span> contributor to the Democrat Party</span>,so,every single string will be pulled, and he will most likely get away, scot free.

2) Jewish.

Democrat and jewish - in other words: total 100% immunity.

In today's Toronto Sun, columnist Steve Simmons wrote, without going into detail, about the vile voice mail messages Kendra sent him when Antonio played with the Raptors. No shock there, yet Steve found it in his heart to call Mrs.Davis a lovely woman.Wimp!

I saw the short video of Davis' wife waving her arms in front of
the man saying, I guess, "you can't touch this." All the while the man
is signaling to security to get her under control. She just seems like
another black woman with some attitude.

Axelrod decided not to sue after all. All parties agree it was just a 'misunderstanding.'

misunderstanding

On the one hand, I agree that there should be no lawsuit. Suing for every minor infraction under the sun is ruining this country. But on the other hand, if the roles were reversed and he had placed HIS hands on Kendra Davis, or threatened HER in anyway, this guy would have been prosecuted, fined, and sued by the Davis', no ifs ands or buts.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Kendra Davis, the wife of New York Knicks forward Antonio Davis, was charged with misdemeanor battery Thursday for allegedly throwing a cup of coffee at a woman during a traffic dispute last fall, police said.

Last month, Kendra Davis had a verbal confrontation with a fan at a Knicks-Bulls game in Chicago, prompting her husband to climb into the stands to check on her. He was ejected and received a five-game suspension from the NBA.

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Kendra Davis, 31, of Naperville, on misdemeanor charges of battery and driving on a suspended license, Sgt. Joel Truemper said.

Kathleen Bessner, 40, claimed Kendra Davis ran a stop sign on Oct. 27, 2005, according to police. Bessner told police that when she confronted Davis at an intersection, Davis threw a cup of coffee through the driver's side window.

The running joke is that Antonio Davis went into the stands to protect the fan from his wife. He knows what she is capable of.
