All the runners, except Carl Lewis, it seems, are white. At least of those mentioned in the article who have publicly associated themselves with the doctor.

It's NY Times. Hit piece on white athletes in an effort to discredit their achievements ala Armstrong? I mean why focus on this one doctor when his treatment or similar treatments could be widespread?

I only gave this article a cursory scan AND this is outside of my usual jurisdiction of sports knowledge/interest (i.e. track and field, doping in track and field).

This could be a sign of being overtrained. In the past if you read the training regiment of world class long distance runners they didn't nearly do the miles of todays runners(1970's runners). Something has to give when your probably doing double the miles of a previous generation. This could be relatively nothing or like the Kenyan mini scandal the sign of something bigger, only time will tell.

The article refers to hypo-thyroidism which is something I have dealt with in the past. It's related to diet.

Even though its a fatigue-causing condition, I soon realised the more energy drinks/bars/gels I consumed the greater my fatigue became.

You don't need drugs to sort out hypo-thyroidism, you just avoid (don't eat/drink) the root cause(s).

Also, just to note.

Carl Lewis was a vegan.

It's been proven that cruciferous vegetables can cause hypothyroidism.

Cruciferous vegetables can potentially be goitrogenic (inducing goiter formation). They contain enzymes that interfere with the formation of thyroid hormone in people with iodine deficiency.[2][3] Cooking for 30 minutes significantly reduces the amount of goitrogens and nitriles. At high intake of crucifers, the goitrogens inhibit the incorporation of iodine into thyroid hormone and also the transfer of iodine into milk by the mammary gland.[4]
