Boy its getting ugly. Leading the league in turnovers again. But Tice wont even think about putting in backup Brad Johnson. By the way didnt Johnson win a Super Bowl not to long ago? Also i remember Culpepper getting injured a few years back and the vikings inserting Gus Ferote who went 6-0.If that was a black QB who went 6-0, he'd be quickly labeled franchise material.Hell if i were Daunte i would bench myself, this is just embarassing everyone!!! Except me

Maybe Moss was more valuable than Minnesota thaught. Seriously though, they are giving Culpepper way to much money to bench him after two weeks. Even if he keeps up performances like this, he wouldn't be benched until week 5 or 6 at the earliest, even then it wouldn't be a permanent benching.

JoeV, Moss' team is also 0-2. The Vikes has Moss and a losing record thelast two years, but Duante is definitely missing him. His true talent is now showing. Duante is now looking like the Kordell Stewart experiment while the home town crown wonders how many bad years it will take to bench him. Viking fans have been saying for years that Duante is a shoe-in "future hall of famer". When talked about on sports radio in Minnesota it was often "future hall of famer - duante Culpepper". Just shows how stupid most fans are.

Here's to your pursuit of the record Duante!

I had to laugh as I watched the Vikings-Cincinnati game last week. .After 2 consecutive miserable performances by Culpepper, (5 turnovers in each game, not to mention he lost two fumbles against Cincinati that were called back due to a Bengals penaltys) the announcers kept saying the reason for the vikings offensive slump is due to the loss of offensive coordinater Scott Linehan, and the injury to Center Matt Birk. They must have repeated this 3 or 4 times during the game. I then see former viking reciever Chris Carter with an article in some sports magazine essentially saying the same thing. This is pathetic. I am sure glad Kyle Boller gets the same treatment. The worst part about it was the poll in the Minneapolis star tribune the next day, where the people "spoon fed" from the caste sports announcer the day earlier, essentially said the same thing. Wake up people take off the blinders!!!

If Culpepper was a white QB, the media would be saying that Randy Moss made his career. Of course with Moss being gone, they have to find some other reasons for his poor play other than pointing the finger at Culpepper who has been atrocious thus far.

Nonetheless, of the starting black QBs ,I would have to rank Culpepper as still one of the better ones. My black QBs rankings would be as follows: 1) McNabb 2) Leftwich 3) Culpepper 4) McNair 5) Brooks 6) Vick 7) Wright.

Of the aforementioned, I feel only McNabb and Leftwich warrant starting jobs in the NFL at the present time. Volek is much better than McNair at this point, Brooks should have been replaced two years ago. Wright doesn't even belong in the NFL, yet alone starting ,and we all know how "great" Vick is

Culpepper did put together one of the best seasons by a QB ever last year, and Moss was out with an injury for a portion of it, so I don't think he can be written off just yet. I've always said he stepped into an ideal situation in Minnesota, with a great o-line that gave him excellent protection and he had Moss to throw it to, but he has some talent and isn't a dummy. Two games is too early to pass judgment on him yet IMO. Peyton Manning hasn't looked so hot either through two games.

Any quarterback who has gotten an opportunity to play with the vikings talented offense over the past few years has shined. The only reason he had such great stats last year is because he was allowed to pad his stats(throwing for a td on 1st and goal, throwing for td's in blowouts). His stats were accumulated in meaningless situations, just look at their record last year, a quarterback with stats like that should lead his team to alot of victories.

And yes Moss did help him out immensly by pulling coverages down field, allowing Culpepper to complete a huge amount of dump passes for big yards, which also helped pad the stats.I watched most of their games last year andI could just tell the offense was set up to make him look good, not win games. IMO his endless ability to fumble, outways any of his talent. He's no Peyton Manning and his stats will show it this year.Edited by: mr.wonderfull

I wonder if Daunte is struggling because the OL's leader Matt Birk is out for the year?

Well Deacon, I have heard just about every excuse for Duante not performing this year - Matt Birk is one of them. Here are some others:

1)future "star" Onterio (Whizzinator) Smith is suspended for the season.

2) The offensive line isn't doing its job.

3) The recievers are dropping balls.

4) and, of course, Randy Moss is no longer here to stretch the field.

5) Koren Robinson hasn't arrived yet, but when he does look out! (this point conflicts with point 3)

6) Mike Tice sucks and needs to be fired.

7) They no longer have offensive coordinator and apparently genius, Scott Linnehan.

Never, will any media sports outlet in Minnesota blame Culpepper for his horrible performances.

Culpepper has a career quarterback rating of 91. Not bad, but what you don't know is that he has been outperformed by EVERY other Viking backup QB (except Randall Cunningham) since 1999 - his rookie year.

Gus Frerrotte = qb rating 118

Jeff George = 94

Todd Bouman = 98

I have watched a lot of Viking games in the Duante era and can tell you that it does seem that they try to pad his stats with meaningless TD passes and 1 and 10 and the 1 yard line TD passes. He performs horribly in the clutch and horribly in big games. This to me is a better indication of how good a QB is than statistics alone. Its time for Duante to go, but I will actually enjoy watching him and seeing how far he has to sink before the Head Coach will replace him.

Don.

DON!

You're not seriously comparing Daunte's last two games, where he tied the all-time turnover record by a single player over two games, to Peyton's performances in his last two games are you?

I agree with you in that it might be too soon to bench Culpepper for the year, as you said, its only been two games. But the guy should have been benched after throwing 5 INT in a single game, and perhaps allowed to start the following week.

You and I both know that if Culpepper were white, he'd have been gone after his performance in Week 1.

No, I wasn't seriously comparing Culpepper and Manning, just pointing out that Manning is off to a slow start. But I don't think Culpepper should be benched after two terrible games.

Don't forget that he lead the league in turnovers a couple of years ago and never got benched. How long will it take this year?

He played well this week, so I'm sure his job is fine for the time being if he keeps winning... Who are his backups anyway?

Daunte stunk it up in the second half of the game. He was sacked like what, five times, in the second half alone while nursing a 17 point lead???

As far as I'm concerned the jury is still out. I'm waiting to see how much of an effect Moss's departure will have on him in the long run.

And I will feel this way til white QBs who play just as good , or just as poorly, depending on your point of view, get the same benefit of the doubt as black QBs. See: Jake Plummer, Drew Brees, et al.

It gets uglier. Yesterday Duante threw two more interceptions and fumbled twice. He also was sacked 9 times! Is that a record? He had decent protection but hung-on to the ball forever. This guy is completely lost out there - it's getting absurd.

They have to give him something. Its the only way they can salvage his reputation:

"What, you want to BENCH DAUNTE CULPEPPER? The guy just won the NFL - NFC Player of the Week Award, for chrissakes!"

From ESPN's recap of the Vikings - Panthers:

The Vikings (2-5) showed little emotion in this one and had no leadership after Daunte Culpepper left with a sprained right knee on the final play of the first quarter. Minnesota coach Mike Tice said the team feared Culpepper will miss the rest of the season.

"The quarterback doesn't appear to be in good shape," Tice said. "Things happen that are devastating. This certainly, if it's as serious as it appears, is devastating to our football team."

Any chance the team will perform better with Brad Johnson starting next week?

I don't think so. I don't think that these guys will play for Brad Johnson. This franchise is in such disarray, I don't know that it can be fixed without a fire sale. Everything goes!

Looks like Moss was just the tip of the iceberg.

UPDATE </font>

Brad Johnson replaced Culpepper and went 13-for-28 for 162 yards and a touchdown in Minnesota's 38-13 loss to the Panthers.

"We have to rally around Brad," Tice said. "Brad doesn't have the same arm Daunte has, [but] Brad has played a lot more games than Daunte has. We can make up for the different styles by going to more short passing to give ourselves a chance to suit his style.

"Brad is a very good quarterback, he's won a Super Bowl. We have faith in Brad."

Not bad comments from Tice, although what else can he say under the circumstances. Its funny, Brad Johnson threw for more yards and touchdown passes in half a game than Vick throws during four full quarters of playing.

Maybe now the Vikings will be able to score a few points without Fumblepepper giving the ball away. Edited by: White Shogun

What was Culpepper thinking scrambling down the field like that on the play he got injured??? Did he think he was Vick for a second?? He should have slid like just about any other rational QB would have. Culpepper is way bigger then Vick (I think by 2-4 inches and probably by 30-40 pds) why was he scrambling like that??

Oh well with him out it is certain that most of the rest of the team will give up and the net result will be they will get a higher draft pick for the rebuilding process next year (will they have Mike Martz replace Tice as head coach???)

Culpepper blowing out his knee was bound to happen. The same thing will
happen to Vick. Knees get destroyed when you run around and do not have
the running back instincts and experience of knowing how to run and
protect yourself at the same time.

The NFL of today is marked by an amazing attrition rate.

For the record, I always thought Culpepper was highly overrated even
when he was at USF. He reminds me of what many inner city highschools
do lately. They get a big buck who can throw a spiral and put him in as
QB. He'll run a bit, throw a bit...always getting by on his size and
the ideology that he is the "superior black athlete".

Mistakes are overlooked because of his "superior black athleticism".

The Vikings invested a lot in Culpepper and he obviously has not
returned like they'd like him to. His knee will never be the same and
as the article pointed out, you can't weigh 265 pounds and run around
with a reconstructed knee.

His value is about zero right now. Tough business. Vick will blow out
his knee sometime as well. The caste idea of reinventing the QB
position for 'superior black athletes' does not work because QB is a
position of mental toughness and smarts more than athleticism anyway. A
few highlight reel plays does not make a QB over the long haul.

I almost feel a tiny bit bad, but than I remember that the word on the
street is that Culpepper is one of the biggest party boyz on the
Vikings and he has been involved in all sorts of orgy parties before.
Well, the bright side is that now he can dedicate his time to partying
instead of football.

Farewell Daunte.....

I won't miss you.

I am sort of glad to see this happening, not the injury, but Culpepper being out. I hope Brad Johnson does well the rest of the year.

Brad will do well if the Vikings let him. Dont be surprised however, if they go to an ultra conservitve look. This will make it look like Daunte was not the reason for their struggles. Also be prepared for ALOT of dropped balls and slacking off at the reciever position. The last thing they want is Daunte to look bad.
