Alright so I am sort of a soccer newbie if you will. I've just found out that the Barclays English Premiere League did not start until 1992. Yet, teams in the league such as Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal, and so on have been around for way longer than that.

So what league(s) did these teams play in before Barclays came around? Did England have another league before Barclays was implemented? Also why is it called "Barclays"? Additionally, does this league cover just England or the whole United Kingdom?

Thanks for you help soccer fans! If you ever need an American Football question answered I'll be glad to help!!!

It was the Engish League with 4 divisions called 1,2,3,4. They just renamed the top division the Premier League and dropped 4 teams. There used to be 24 teams in the top division. It was called the English Premier League until a few years ago when Barclays paid a lot of money to get it renamed. It covers just England, although there are a few Welsh teams in it,Cardiff City,Swansea and Crewe.Scotland,Wales and NI have their own league, just like their own National Teams.

They also have conferance teams below the 4 divisions. These teams can get promoted and demoted just like in the top 4 divisions. So, I could start my own team today and be placed at the lowest level of conference and in theory be promoted all the way to the Premiership and qualify for the Champions League by getting into the top 4.There is no cabal of owners like in the US to keep you out. I don't think you need permission to start at the lowest level like I have mentioned.I am going to check further, but that is my understanding.

Barclays is a bank and sponser. The premier league is English only. Scotland Wales and Northern Island have their only leagues, although the Scottish one is the only one of those which has much quality.

The Premier league brought with it all the crap we see today. Pre 1992, the English soccer league was much less commercialized and 'gone crazy'. Soccer pundits agree that with the creation of the Premier league, rampant out of control capitalism entered the game and it has now ruined it for a lot of fans. There is a feeling amonst many fans that it is no longer a game for them, but much more for the people who make money out of it. Ticket prices have gone through the roof, and clubs are bought out by rich sheikes who use them as a toy. I used to love English football, but this season my interest level is at an all time low.

The Manchester City franchise is now owned by trillionaires who plan to move it to Dubai were there is a bigger support base and more people eat $20 hot dogs. They will draft the 300 best players in the world with the promise of an oil field a week and a planet shaped like a palm leaf. How can anyone support this nonsense?!!

Crewe is in Cheshire so, while geographically close to Cymru, it's still definitely England...

I stand corrected. I was thinking of Wrexham, which is in Wales.

It's interesting that it took some time for the EPL to get to be the top league in the world. Italy had the most money in the 90's and was considered the best league because they had many of the top foreigners. Then, through marketing the EPL got to be the top league with overseas tv money coming in.

A couple of years ago the Italian league criticized the English when Chelsea and Man Unt played in the Champions League final saying that they aren't English clubs, but there were at least 10 English players who started the game. Then, last year Inter Milan won the title with zero Italians in the game, but the Italian officials,of course, said nothing.Italy had no problem in the 90's getting a bunch of foreign players like Rudd Gullit,Zidane, van Basten,Maradona to name a few.
But,in the 90's there were still a core of Italian players in the teams.
All the European leagues started to go bad in the 90's. There were a few foreigners on the teams in the 80's, but after it got worse. Then, they started to bring in the Africans in larger numbers in the 2000's,plus Colombians,Ecuadorians. You name it.
