37 years old and a legal 10.18 by Patrick Johnson in Perth last night.

Matt Davies ran a 10.23 PB to push Johnson all the way.
24 year old Davies also ran a PB in the 200, a legal 20.54 and a Com Games "A" qualifierEdited by: mastermulti

Those are great times. I'm very impressed. Matt Davies still has some upside to go. I really like his speed endurance over 200 meters. Patrick Johnson is the Aussie Record Holder for a reason but you have to wonder how much longer he can compete at a high leval? I will have to try and catch this race on video. Thanks for the update and please keep us informed.

Next weekend will be a very big meet in Australia. Let's see if some of these guys can improve on their times. In my opinion, Davies is the best sprinter that Australia has consistantly over both the 100 & 200 meters! At 24 years of age, he still has time to try and make a mark in the next several years!Edited by: white lightning

I think that's true. One blessing is that he has come on slowly but surely and big pressure wasn't foisted upon him at too young an age.
It would be nice to see him gradually heading to his peak at 28 or so.

PJ just became no.8 35-39 year old 100m man of all time so he's still capable of pulling the younger guys to better times. Very good to have an experienced veteran around to help the young'uns develop

I have some results from the Athletics Statistics site, which I presume are correct, although I can't confirm them on the Sydney site yet. Anyway, if correct, it looks like Ben Offereins smoked a blazing 44.86 in the 400 (an event where the young Aussies are strong). And wunderkind Ryan Gregson won a close duel over Collis Birmingham in a very fast 1500, where three Aussies finished ahead of the top Kenyan: Ryan Gregson 3.35.42;
Collis Birmingham 3.35.89; Mitch Kealey 3.36.00; Collins Cheboi (ken)
3.36.43; Jeremy Roff 3.36.79; Adrian Blincoe (nzl) 3.38.93

That time by Offereins is correct. Steve Hooker also went 5.91 in the pole vault. He took 3 attempts at 6.01 meters! Sally McClellan won the 100 meters and the 200 meters. Melissa Breen was 2nd in the 100 meters. Patrick Johnson beat Matt Davies by 1/100th of a second to win the 100. The time was a 10.34 over the distance with little wind. Wroe was also 2nd in the 400 running a 45.40!Edited by: white lightning

Glad to know those times are for real--The Aussies are really showing something from 400 to 1500. The 400 results were excellent, but the 1500 was even better. That Kenyan who could only manage fourth was no slouch--he was last year's Oslo Bislett games winner! And Gregson may not even be twenty years-old-yet, so he's got plenty of good racing ahead of him. Very exciting.

after holding back tapering till this week (the pointy end of our season) after a series of niggling injuries, Aaron Rouge-Serrett ran a 2/10 PB of 10.17 last night.

I'm happy for the kid. He has waited a long time for this kind of breakthrough. I've always said that anyone in the world that can break 10.20 has my respect. Most people have no idea how fast that is. Even Charlie agrees with that. Maybe this will be a step in the right direction. Matt Davies and Serrett are both 25 years of age so maybe they can still go a little faster in the next couple of years. They might just go sub 10.10 in perfect conditions. Congrats on the new p.b.Edited by: white lightning

Matt's 25 next month but Aaron only turned 22 in January. so hopefully both have some future.

I agree! Anything under 10.20 is phenomenally fast in all but very elite company...... we mere mortals running beside a 10.17 guy would verify this as they disappear effortlessly into the distance.

Let's hope for a great national champs with the top three this year recording legal 10.17, 10.18 and 10.23 with several others honing in.

I want to see a fast Aussie relay team for the C'wealths this year

Wow that is great news about Aaron. Didn't realise that he was so young. I hoping for a great national championships as well. It just hasn't been the same since Shirvo, Ross and Johnson were all in their prime going at it. Not only is all of Australia hoping for another Shirvo, the whole world is as well! Thanks for all of the updates mastermulti. Keep up the good work. If this kid continues to sprint at a high level, we will have to start a new thread for him. Here is a link to an article about him acheiving the number #5 time ever on Australia Soil by an Aussie Sprinter!

yeah, me too!
It is the end of our season early next month but the difficulty with the Aussie sprinters is getting ready to peak in your northern summer. They need to be in the same or better shape for November in India.
This dual peaking in a year is something we've never got quite right.

I would love to see a sub 38 relay. Our 38.17 was set in 1995 with only one guy in the team (Damien Marsh) running sub 10.20 at the time. The others weren't far behind him though, and they had good Aussie team spirit which brought the best out of them, together with high technical skillsEdited by: mastermulti

We are only a few days away for the 2010 Australian Championships. I am curious to see how Aaron Rouge Serrett and Matt Davies do among others. Let's hope for some warm weather with a good positive wind or no wind. I want to see some new personal bests by these guys in the 100 & 200 meters. Patrick Johnson and a few others will push them to run their best. I wish we could get a live feed to watch it.

Let us know if there is any tv coverage mastermulti? Thanks.

For a country small in population, Australia presents a surprising number of promising athletes across the distance spectrum. Along with Rouge Serrett (who is most interesting in the sprints because he is very young and could eventually go sub-10), there are some fine Aussie 400 and 1500 runners. The name that has the track community abuzz is Ryan Gregson, a mid-distance guy (he's only entered in the 1500) who's been running outstanding times as a junior. He may have just graduated to senior status. At any rate, his times are special, and he's worth keeping an eye on.

There's a good but unlinkable flash preview at runner's tribe, which is solely dedicated to Australian athletics.

good to see Ato Bolden down here for a few clinics with Nova Batman. 350 indigenous west Australian kids are attending. There'll be some talent there.
He'll also be around watching the Aussie titles this weekend.
story here

you can also negotiate from here to look at the time schedule for the next three days of events

well, the heats have been run .
Aaron R/S 10.32, Pat Johnson 10.36, Matt Davies 10.41 all legal and easy. The African/Australians were a few metres back.

Melissa Breen a comfortable 11.34 and no competition at this stage

one of the semi finalists to watch is a young guy named Tim Leathart. Only been doing full time training for 12 months and down to a wind-still 10.55 from last month which he just ran in the heats as well'
That may be the best he can do at this stage but it'd be nice to see another PB in the semis and to make the final. Here's hoping!

Great story on Tim. He is built like a sprinter should be built and he has the right attitude. Great to see some younger guys down under stepping it up. It would be great if he could train with Aaron so they could push each other.

All of the big names made it through the semi finals. The times are pretty good so far considering that they have had very little wind in the races. I'm hoping for a 1-2 finish of Aaron and Matt Davies in the finals later tonight. Here are the results of the semi finals of the 2010 Australian Champs in the 100 meters.

Some of the finals are complete:

"In the men's blue-riband sprint it was Victorian Aaron Rouge-Serret
who reigned supreme, clocking 10.32 (w:0.4) for his first 100m
national crown. Rouge-Serret took out the dash ahead of Australian
Flame 4x100m relay teammate Matt Davies (10.44),
Jump Start to London athlete Jacob Groth (10.45)
and national 100m record-holder Patrick Johnson
(10.47)."

400: "In what was the race of the night 24-year-old Offereins bolted out
of the blocks and never looked back, stitching up his first
national crown in the Commonwealth Games A-qualifying time of 45.17
ahead of Steffensen in 45.72 and fellow world championships 4x400m
relay bronze medallists Joel Milburn (45.75) and
Sean Wroe (45.98)."

800: "- Lachlan Renshaw stormed down the home
straight to win the men's 800m, stopping the clock at 1:46.66."

1500 semis: "Australian Flame teammates
Jeff Riseley (3:45,09), Jeremy
Roff
(3:45.59) and Ryan Gregson (3:45.98)
all advanced to tomorrow afternoon's blockbuster final of the men's
1500m."

That 1500 final could be epic. Anyway, all of the race videos will be available on Runner's Tribe.

the sprint results were only moderate but that's where they're at in cool conditions with zero wind I guess. They had expected a warm night and tailwind.

ON the exciting side, Fabrice Lapierre jumped a 3.1 mps windy 8.78 metres (28'9.5"), the no.6 biggest jump in history

in second place, Chris Noffke jumped a legal PB of 8.33 (27'4")

And Mitchell Watt is sitting it out recovering at present, so we have three top performers going to India in OctoberEdited by: mastermulti
