Another White Cornerback Sighting

Northwestern has a white cornerback -- Jeff Backes. The two announcers for tonight's Northwestern-Ohio State game (both black by the way) commented on his speed, so to actually be allowed to play CB and be remarked about like that, Backes must have some serious talent.


That makes at least four I-A teams starting a white at cornerback this season: Northwestern, Arizona State, Ohio State, and Boston College.

Great news. Northwestern has always been a bit more friendly to white players probably due to the academic requirements. Ironically black announcers are more likely to give white players their due because the black announcers don't live in fear of one wrong racial comment destroying their careers.

That's a good point about the black announcers. I would say that overall they aren't quite as biased toward white athletes as white announcers are. The white ones probablyfeel that the slightest deviation from the party line endangers their lucrative salaries. Of course there are plenty of pretty blatantly black racist announcers -- for the same reason, they don't live in fear of racial comments hurting them like it does their white counterparts -- and a few white announcers who are pretty fair. I guess naming themwould bea good idea for a threadin the Media Stereotyping section.
