Looks like the stunt did not work lol.

Vanderbilt has fired HC Derek Mason, per Brett McMurphy of Stadium.
Early on in Mason's tenure, he seemed like the right guy for the job. After a 3-9 start in his first season with the team, Mason eventually got the team to a consistent .500 level squad, which ain't half bad for Vandy. Things started to fall apart with another 3-9 season in 2019, however, and it's only gotten worse in 2020. The Commodores do not have a single win this season. Most of their eight losses have been by multiple scores, with their 17-12 loss to Texas A&M in the opener being the only impressive close game. Mason finishes his Vanderbilt tenure with a 27-55 record.

All the experts were in favor of the Mason hiring initially.

Yea I remember his name being thrown around alot when watching Stanford games while he was a coach there. Vanderbilt isn't an easy gig for sure but out of the box recruiting methods would of yielded more success.
