the Indianapolis Colts have signed wide receiver Brett McDermott out of Holy Cross to a free agent contract. i don't know much about him, but he put up really good numbers in college.

along with fellow free agent signee John Matthews, and 4th-round draft pick Austin Collie, that brings the number of White rookie wideouts in the Colts' camp to three.

out of the 9 total receivers in camp for the Colts, 5 are White men (Collie, Matthews, McDermott, Samuel Giguere, and Anthony Gonzalez).

hopefully most of them will stick come the final cut-down.

the Colts have 7 tight ends in camp, and 6 are White men. led by the tremendous Dallas Clark, the Colts also feature Jacob Tamme who has wide receiver speed and hands. deep snapper Justin Snow is listed as a tight end, but he earns his paychecks snapping the ball.

the other White tight ends looking for a roster spot are Tom Santi, Jamie Petrowski, and rookie free agent Colin Cloherty from Brown University.

there are 3 white defensive backs in camp. speed demon Matt Giordano and headhunters Jamie Silva and Brannon Condren.

after dominating in camp and pre-season a year ago, it was a real disappointment when Condren and Silva didn't make the final cut. hopefully, this year will bring a better result for these talented athletes.

If they start just one white DB then they would officially be my favorite team. Giordano is a beast.

Good post! I don't know anything about this McDermott guy- but I can tell you Matthews and Giguerre are better prospects than Roy Hall IMHO. Roy Hall had EXTREMELY low production at Ohio State (never eclipsed 230 yards receiving- in a season- under 150 his last two years)- his speed and black skin got him drafted.

I feel Garcon was slightly overrated. Garcon was productive at Mount Union and has the measurables-but I remember reading some questioning about a couple areas of his game before the draft-can't remember exact details- Also, as a Division III player- I highly doubt he would have been drafted if he were white.

Collie is a natural Slot-man or Flanker and could be an absolute stud in those roles.

Giguerre was very productive in the CIS and spent last year on the taxi squad I believe. This is from his site:
Samuel has been timed in the 4.4 range in the 40-yard dash with a career best time of 4.35. He is a rare natural athlete with a 40-inch vertical, 4.14 short shuttle, 10-foot, 1-inch broad jump and has also completed 23 reps of 225 pounds during offseason training.

John Matthews is an underrated very productive small school player who I have read many positive things about. Matthews has a complete game and is a reliable target.

Out of these guys- Roy Hall and Brett McDermott are probably the most appropriate guys to cut in a fair world- at this exact moment anyway. Hall was actually hurt in 2007 and only had one catch last year. I hope the other 2 white UFA WRs all make it, even if one of the UFAs is practice squaded!

i think he will have a great time in indy white wideouts have proven that they can make plays when they have a halfway decent quarterback throwing them the ball

I like the article, accept where Collie is being compared to Brandon Stokley....which makes little sense. If they wanted to continue the standard cliche of comparing white WR to white WR...I think Collie plays more like a bigger Anthony Gonzo.

Oh well, at least he was drafted high by a good team. The media loves comparing "apples to apples." That way, nobody is offended. It works both ways, as nearly every unathleteic, obese black oaf playing QB is now compared to Culpepper. Not very complimentary.Edited by: Thrashen

Starting free safety Antoine Bethea has a cracked bone in his right hand. How long he'll be out is unknown at this point. The almost perpetually injured starting strong safety, Bob Sanders, is once againinjured and may not be ready for the beginning of the regular season.

Matt Giordano is currently listed as Sanders' backup. Jamie Silva is behind Giordano. Brandon Condren is third at FS after Bethea and Bullitt, meaning three of the four backups at DB are currently white.

Don, I do not think Condren is on the team anymore. I went to the site today and only saw Giordano and Silva listed. I might have missed him though. I wonder why they did not resign Josh Thomas.

Condren was waived ... i've not seen a reason why, although it is likely due to an injury at this stage of camp.

in other Colts-related news ... Peyton Manning seems to be liking Collie.

Manning said he expects Collie to contribute.

"Austin will be playing this year,"Â￾ Manning said. "I'm not giving anything away as far as what the rotation is and what the depth chart looks like, but he will be in the mix."Â￾

I was looking at the Colt's depth chart today, and they could have three white WRs on their opening day roster. The ones on their depth chart that should be on the team are: Gonzalez, Collie, and McDermott.

Three out of five is unheard of in todays NFL. Hopefully, Giguere will make the team too, although having four white WRs would bring out the diversity police.

Jack,

have you seen Brett McDermott play? if so, please give us a report on the kind of player he is. i haven't seen him play, and i'm curious why you think he'd be favored over Giguere or John Matthews ...

Matthews is a proven playmaker with great hands, and Sam Giguere is a raw, elite athlete with tons of upside. both have what it takes to be NFL wideouts, but as you say it is doubtful an NFL team would keep that many White wideouts.

in a related note, Matthews had a team-high 30 yards on 3 catches tonight. Austin Collie had a team-high 4 catches, but for only 17 yards.

on the defensive side of the ball, Matt Giordano had a game-high 11 solo tackles! awesome!

Jamie Silva had 5 solo tackles and 2 assists.

as i posted in the pre-season thread, in the battle for the third receiver spot black wideout Pierre Garcon dropped the first pass thrown to him on a well set-up bubble screen. he just flat dropped a perfectly thrown ball.

both Jamie Silva and Matt Giordano are looking really good. both have already made beautiful open field, one-on-onetackles.

JC, Melvin Bullit started most of the season for the infinately-injury Boob Sanders....why was Giordano starting instead of Bullit?

Did Giordano and Silva actually both start the game in the secondary....and then Bullit was the first substitute?

Thrashen,

Bullitt didn't play because of some unknown injury. and yes, Giordano and Silva started at safety. and they both played very, very well.

rumor has it that the competition at safety in Indy is very real. if that is true, and the decision will be based on performance, then the fleet-footed Giordano and the sure-tackling Silva may end up as starters. especially since the oft-injured Bob Sanders is injured again, and Bullitt and Bethea are also nursing injuries.
