This weekend the Eagles are honoring the 50th anniversary of their last championship team. They are playing the Packers whom they defeated 17-13 to win the 1960 title game, the only playoff game Vince Lombardi ever lost. The Eagles will wear the 1960 style uniforms on Sunday.

I saw the 1960 Eagle-Packer NFL Championship game on TV at age 10. Does anyone else on the Forum remember watching it?

No, but those were certainly much better and more just times. Today the NFL is nothing but pure black racism. May it have nothing but bad luck and declining numbers.

Years later I remember reading a pro football history book and seeing this game mentioned. Interesting note that the color man for SB X Tom Brookshier was a corner back for the Eagles in this game. If you ever see photos of the game or era you will notice that racial ratio was different, the players looked more like normal people and many players looked like hockey players as the mouth guard wasn't in use. Also the crew cut was a popular hair style.. [IMG]

Not me. [IMG] I was 8 months and a day from being born. My parents had been married 3 months and lived in then-still-largely-white, now 99.9999% black (see * below) Chester, PA (they both were born there [as was I] and in fact were HS classmates).

The 1960 NFLCG was blacked out in Philly so my father drove down to Elkton, MD, found a bar, and watched it on a Baltimore station. So he's told me.

*I'm probably exaggerating slightly on the percentage but you get the idea.

Eh, I don't know. That sounds like a pretty accurate demographic of that area now. [IMG]

Reality bites. I’m an LSU guy. So it really hurts me to be honest in saying the Great Steve Van Buren was not one of us.

His pictures clearly show Sub-Saharan features. His tight red kinki curls, his oversized a-typical teeth, his wide spread flat nose, large upper lip, his bug eyes etc.

How did he play at LSU during segregation? The old way of saying it is that he “passed.” Also, he “passed” in high school in New Orleans at Warren Easton High School.

He was from Honduras where race mixing was/is highly prevalent.

People in Louisiana can spot even the most convincing white looking mulattos. LSU knew. They just could not let such a superior athlete go. He looked white enough obviously.

A friend told me his numbers were so outrageous he said,”come on!” In other words, just the shear dominance so early is highly suspect that a white man achieved that. No offense to us.

No LSU fan or Eagles fan wants to admit it but pictures don’t lie. It doesn’t take an Anthropologist to see Van Buren is clearly part black. Which means all black in Baton Rouge.

Sorry. I know Van Buren played way before the 1960s.

BTW. If you delete my post you are threatened by the truth.

And if you think my acceptance that he was not one of us brings me any joy you are sadly mistaken.

    God Bless

An LSU fan on caste football? Haha that's grand.

I mean you're not wrong about Van Buren, I'm just confused why you are harping about that when no one in this thread even mentioned him? Let alone claimed him as one of "us"! Your post won't be deleted because we're not totalitarian commies. You can say your piece And of course was just giving you **** about your Bayou Tigers.

Anyways interesting thread to get bumped, never realized that 1960 matchup was Lombardi's only playoff loss!

I’ll take the positives of your reply and diplomatically try to dismiss the passive aggressive shots. You agree that Van Buren was not one of us. Thank you. I had to speak my mind somewhere. It might as well be here.

I’ve seen people on LSU forums vehemently arguing this point. Accepting that an iconic figure you always believed was white is not is harsh. So shoot the messenger is one knee jerk response.

Denial is the first step in the grieving process. And one of my posts on Caste about another beloved athlete who I believe is not all white got deleted. Yes, I’m just busting peoples’ bubbles. So I am concerned about freedom of speech not being respected. I’m gun shy of speaking my mind here.

Now as far as giving me flack over being a Tiger fan I get it. Once we lose the QB position, the last of all 22 starters I will stop watching for good. It’s depressing because I’ve listened to LSU games on the radio and watched them on TV my whole life.

We did have some greats in Jacob Hester, Sammy Martin, Todd Kinchen and of course Joe Borrow to name a few. But realistically I concede it’s the end.

Thank you but I just found a series of old posts defending the strong belief Van Buren was (alive at the time) white.

I’m from New Orleans and in the old days light skinned black with more neutral racial features and such use to play themselves off as white. They called it “passing.”

Now Van Buren and his family came from Honduras where race mixing was common. I imagine their laws and standards of race were different there from Louisiana.

I think if a family was a little black but looked more white they could consider themselves white.

When the family came to New Orleans they probably fit in with the whites especially a lot of Sicilians in New Orleans who for whatever reason have black features.

So Van Buren passed. And since he was such a great player the coaches and administrators didn’t even let the obvious black appearance enter their conscience.

His pictures on the internet show how Sub-Saharan Van Buren was.

I don’t blame his family if they state they are purely of European ancestry. I would too. Who wouldn’t if given somewhat of what amounts to a choice.

BTW. I loved John Riggins until I saw an interview with Joe Namath where Joe said the black players on the team called Riggins Chocolate Chip because he had his Afro and appeared like a Mulatto. Broke my heart.

Later in Riggin’s career in Washington he cut his hair close and he seemed to be white to me. Now whites can have Afro type looking hair too but Namath was pretty clear it was established the black Jets players knew Riggins was one of them.

Now I’m also getting hate for my posts about all the stars who actually have some black in them. Hey, I wish all these great athletes were white too.

I get no joy from realizing these greats did not have pure European blood. But I’m not going to compromise my heritage.

I actually saw one website that Blake Griffin was judged the best white NBA player. Wtf.

Also when Kappernick was a rookie people were searching the internet to see if he was white.

There are true white athletes who have done great things. There are great white athletes with tremendous potential. We don’t have to pin our sense of achievement on these guys who are mostly white but not pure.

I hope you respect my view. I am open for having my mind changed. I’m not a troll. I am just very socially conservative about race. Some call me a racist but I feel I’m just racially minded in a good way. I am biased towards Caucasians but I wish no harm on other racial groups. I don’t see any evil in that.

sorry for jumping all over with subject matter.

So not just Boling, but now Riggins is black too lol. I'm sure you also think Babe Ruth was black, maybe most great White athletes. Reminds me of people who claim virtually every well known politician was or is Jewish.

The Van Buren thread I cited makes clear he wasn't black; he possibly had some admixture but it wasn't black. Provide links for all your claims, otherwise this curious diversion of the past couple days is over with.

Riggins is an Anglo-Saxon name and like I have stated some people of British ancestry have kinky hair for whatever reason. I also saw this documentary and it was a joke, Namath was on the verge of giggling when he said it. People have said the same thing about Namath with his weird accent, dark skin and penchant for being a fashion plate in his prime and it was the same locker room humor.

PS if a celebrity has known African ancestry they are usually quite political about it, we debated the "Blackness" of Ronda Rhousey and her mother came out and stated what some posters stated and others disputed...
