I thought I knew my white sprinters, but I didn't know Clyde Peach! Thanks for bringing him to my attention.
I did some research on him and found out that in 1966, he ran a 9.5 (and 20.7) in high school, when the HS record was 9.4. He attended Baylor University and ran a 9.2, when the WR was 9.1.
At the 1968 Olympic Trails, he was eliminated in the semis, and immediately decided to retire. (The 1968 Olympic 100m trails were stacked!)
Here's an article about him:
https://www.indystar.com/story/spor...-world-class-life-lived-clyde-peach/82672970/

Great story and I had never heard of him either. The sad thing is that blacks physically mature faster than whites. They hit puberty quicker than any other race and develop muscles, speed, etc a litte faster than other races. So
the point I'm trying to make is that Clyde Peach gave up track too soon. Most white sprinters don't really start to peak until their mid 20's or even late 20's. Yes there are exceptions like Lemaite and Shirvington but this is the
case the majority of the time. My honest opinion is that Clyde Peach would have got faster and maybe broken the world record with another 4 to 6 years of training. Either way what a story. Great guy and exceptional sprinter.

Boling is currently ranked in the top six nationally in the three sprinting events he participates individually: #6 in the 60m (he has run this twice this year), #2 in the 200m (he’s run this once), and #4 in the 400m (he’s run this once). he will participate tomorrow, February 12, for the second time this season in the long jump at the Tiger Paw Invitational. he is then scheduled to run in the 4x400 relay on Saturday at the same meet.

Boling won the long jump today at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, SC. the sophomore leapt 7.76m (25.46 feet).

as of today, that jump places him currently #8 in the NCAA. even before today, he was the only athlete in the national top 10 in all 3 sprint events (60m, 200m, 400m), and now he assumes that position in the long jump, as well. Boling is clearly a special talent.

he is scheduled to run in 4x400m relay tomorrow.

I do not know very much about training for the various sprinting events and I have noticed that there are several members who have run sprints either as youngsters or as mature adults so I pose the following question for them( or anyone else for that matter): Why is Matthew Boling participating in different events each week of this indoor season?

I would think that with the Olympics coming later this year that his coaches would have him concentrating on one or two events; instead, one week he runs the 60 meters and the 200 meters and the next week, he is in the long jump and the 400 meter relay.

I can not find any articles which give any indication of what he might settle on. I personally want to see him in the 100 meters, but I wonder what everyone else thinks.

I will take a quick answer. College Athletics are in the business of making money. It's very common to use a sprinting phenom in multiple events to gain points in meets and win titles/championships.

Boling being the humble and polite kid he is has no problem with this. He did it in high school but it will hurt him in the long run. For him to become world class in 1 or 2 events he needs to focus on
either the 100 & 200 meters or the 200 and 400 meters. I hope he takes the first route. The long jump is just too hard on the body long term. He is too talented to be in that event when the kid has the
potential to be an olympic gold medalist over multiple distances.

I really hope at some point his college coach bites his pride and gets him in the 100 & 200 meters on a regular basis. That is what will make him rich as a professional and also a house hold name if he can win medals!

WL: I agree that Boiling should eliminate the LJ from his event list. Problem is according to his interviews LJ is His favorite event. I doubt the coaches would be able to stop him for doing the LJ even if they wanted to. My own opinion is that he will break 10 seconds in the 100m this year if things align favorably for him. He is on par with Tortu at this age so that is saying something.

Here is the latest article & short interview with both Matthew and his father answering some questions. Matthew Boling in a black belt in martial arts. Wow! Everything he does he excels at or so it seems. What a great kid. He sets
out to do the impossible and makes it happen. According to this article, his favorite events are the 100 & 200 meters and the long jump. Boling wants to do what only Jesse Owens and Carl Lewis have ever done. That's a lofty goal but
nothing is out of reach with this kid. If nothing else this article tells me he prefers the 100 & 200 meters to the 400. That ;makes most of us here very happy! The long jump is just icing on the cake. :)

Matthew Boling ran 20.37 in the heats of the 200m at the SEC Championships.
It's a new indoor PB for him, and also the fastest time in the world this year.

Damn is that fast! The crazy thing is that his training is for so many different events! Just imagine what he might be capable of if he focused on only the 100 & 200 meters? Either way that's an incredible time and he
is letting the world know that he has arrived and he will be a threat to the elite sprinters at some point. Matthew Boling is just a Superman among most men. So much talent. Christophe Lemaitre was my favorite sprinter
for years until his lack of a proper work ethic and injuries turned him into an average sprinter. I am still thankful to Lemaitre for paving the way but guys like Boling, Tortu and others will take it to the next level. There
is no doubt that Matthew Boling is my favorite sprinter now as witnessed by my avatar. I am so excited for what it to come over the next decade. Please let this kid stay healthy and hungry to be the best!

Lemaitre's best indoor 200 is 20.43.

Yes but Lemaitre ran 9.92 and 19.80 wind legal outdoors and medaled at the olympics and world champs!

I'm a huge Matthew Boling fan but he hasn't come close to passing Lemaitre yet other than the indoor 200 meters. No doubt he has the talent. Stay hungry Matt and train like your the slowest sprinter in the race. Between
genetics and hard work lies the Ultimate Success! :)

Boling also long jumped 8.07/26' 5 3/4. Also a PB. Placing fourth overall. It's seems the consensus here is that he scrap the long jump. Although I don't much about track and field, I would agree.
Years ago, when my son was in Track and Field, he qualified for the Jr. Olympics Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa. The 100, 200 and Long Jump. He injured himself while long jumping and had to scratch in the 200m that was being run the same day in order to recover for 100m in which he qualified for the finals.
If Boling is more prone to injury in the LJ, he should quit and concentrate on the 100, 200, and 400. IMO.
Thoughts?

CS totally agree with him scrapping the LJ, the risk of hamstring/ankle and knee injuries is far greater than sprinting. I think he will eventually give the LJ up.

I have noticed how sinewy and well formed his joints and ligaments are. He is a great candidate to handle the much extra workload needed to keep the LJ in his program.

He has three options to become a legend:
1. Dominate all others in both 100/200
2. 100/200/LJ and try to be very lucky to win all at the same Olympiad.
3. 200/400 double gold

I would like him to go with option 1.

I was trained and I trained all my youth sprinters never stop in a race (unless injury happens) until 2 strides past the finish line as well if you think you stepped out of your lane finish the race as you may not have as it is hard to tell unless it is blatant. I think he got flustered because he messed up with lane and he couldn't catch back up. The kid who won is more white than negro.

sprintstar, I agree. He either got flustered because he knew he messed up or he got flustered because if you look closely, when he was coming around the turn it looked as though he kind of lost his balance trying to stay in the lane, but by that time he couldn't catch up. It's incredible that he still ran a 20.55, if he indeed lost his balance and pulled up because he got frustrated.

I believe that Matt Boling will participate in 3 events at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend: l Long Jump, 200 meters and the 4×400 relay

I see another name on the start lists of the NCAA Championships that I recognize, but had completely forgotten about - Zach Shinnick of USC.
He was the California HS Champ in the 400m, and had been running the 200m and 400m at USC. But I haven't heard anything about him in a few years, I think.
It will be interesting to see how he does after a long absence from the track.

Shinnick just missed the 200M final by 5/100th of a second.
It looks like Boling will be in lane 6 for the final with the SEC winner Laird in lane 5 in the second heat. I'm no expert at indoor track, but the announcers keep talking about lane 5 or 6 being the preferred lanes. I believe I would prefer 5 at best. At least you can see your competition. Running in lane 6, I guess is easier because it has less banking? However, running out there without seeing another sprinter would seem more difficult. I was hoping Boling would've received the other lane 5 in heat 1, because his and Laird's preliminary times were the same.
You indoor sprint experts have any thoughts?

Yes I would take lane 5 myself too. It's so hard to run all alone. Is sprinting it's easier to chase someone and also you know if you are in the clear. On the bright side he will be able to open up his stride a little bit. We shall
sse. I would be so happy if he can win because he has 2 sprinters that have fun faster than him indoors over 200 meters. This is a true test and we will see how he handles the pressure. Good luck to Matthew Boling. We will
see it live in the next hour or sooner.

Matthew "White Lightning" Boling does it! He wins the national championship over 200 meters running the 5th fastest indoor 200 meters ever!
Boling won by 1/100th of a second in an incredible time of 20.19! :) Laird pushed him the whole way. This gives him at worldwide respect! :)
