Jacob Hester named LSU starting RB

i wonder what did Tebow do that hurt his chances of being a top NFL pick? he only played the best defense in the league, with an offense that pretty much consists, well, him. the guy is already a superstar imo.

BATON ROUGE -- In the end, it was Jacob Hester, legs pumping, body inches from the ground, grunting, groaning, his way into the end zone.

It was only a 2-yard run, up the gut, but it was the biggest two yards of the evening for the now unanimous No. 1 LSU Tigers (6-0).

Jacob Hester had stolen the game, not from the Florida Gators, but from Tim Tebow.

He stole it like some blue-collar thoroughbred, lighting the fire under the 60-yard drive when all seemed lost, carrying his team to an unforgettable 28-24 victory when all seemed lost.

This was Tim Tebow's night all right, but Jacob Hester simply reached in and grabbed it by the throat with a majestic march that saw the running back out of Shreveport's Evangel High convert two fourth-and-twos by inches, one from midfield, the other at point-blank range.

All Tebow could do was watch from the sidelines, watch Hester get the payoff parade started with a 7-yard slice up the middle, then add a bull rush of 19, then watch LSU, faced with a second-and-18, keep the chains moving by keeping its poise and handing the football to Hester, 4 yards, 2 yards, 3 yards.

And, finally, the final two that left Hester dizzy, seemingly in a daze after he punched it in with 69 seconds remaining, which, fortunately, was not enough time to allow Florida's virtuoso quarterback to produce one more miracle.

Very complimentary. That is just one more reason why I can't stand LSU fans or a lot of people in that part of Louisiana. When I lived there, I used to listen to the post-game radio call in show for LSU and hear the most stupid drunken idiots rant about everything. Those people are nuts, just like a bunch around Tuscaloosa.

There was an article on ESPN.com which I read earlier today, which I think got switched out. It did have some catchphrases that some view as uncomplimentary, but didn't make light of Hester "only" running two yards on that last carry. It said that he "willed" his way into the endzone, which to me isn't that bad because it's not saying that he got lucky, or "walked" in as they sometimes say, it meant that he faced an immense obstacle but still succeeded. They also said he was a "sledgehammer" of a running back, which I like because the connotation is something strong and powerful, that strikes with amazing force.

Those types of phrases, or something like this guy works hard every day, I don't mind as much, as long as its not really a backhanded compliment, like "what he lacks in talent, he makes up for with heart..."

LSU running back Jacob Hester was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced today.

Hester notched his first 100-yard rushing game at LSU, gaining 106 yards and the game-winning, 2-yard touchdown run in the top-ranked Tigers' 28-24 victory against Florida on Saturday.

Hester gained 77 of his yards in the second half and carried the ball eight times on LSU's game-winning 15-play, 60-yard drive. Hester also picked up two fourth-down conversions on the drive in helping LSU stay unbeaten.

Other players winning SEC honors this week include South Carolina defensive end Eric Norwood (defense), Tennessee punter andplace-kicker Britton Colquitt (special teams), Auburn guard Tyronne Gree (offensive lineman), Alabama defensive end Wallace Gilberry (defensive lineman) and South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley (freshman).

From LSU's website, Jacob was athlete of the week for LSU and Sporting News' player of the week, in addition to SEC honors.

Hester rushed for a career-high 106 yards and the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute left on the clock in LSU's 28-24 win over Florida on Saturday. En route to the score, the senior from Shreveport, La., twice converted on fourth down as he carried the ball eight times on the LSU's final possession, a drive that consumed 60 yards on 15 plays and took over eight minutes off the clock.

In all, Hester averaged 4.6 yards per touch on his career-high 23 carries against a defense that entered the game allowing just 63 yards per contest.

He was also recognized as the Sporting News Player of the Week, the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and the CBS Player of the Game for his efforts.

Just checked out the LSU website myself. The exposure he is getting is great. It's one small step to reversing the caste system. Every opportunity I get, I let people know that if Hester, or Leonard, Wariner, etc. can do it, there are many other white athletes that can as well.

Jacob Hester will appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, according to reports.

I hope he is on the cover, I'll have to get one of those!

Also as per Draft Daddy, Mel Kiper has now projected Hester as a RB instead of a FB.

He play a lot of tailback, some fullback and on the kick-coverage teams. A fine blocker and a dangerous receiver. Hester also happens to be white, a subject that arises, every so often, on the field. Earlier in his career, Hester recalls, a Tennessee player asked him : Shouldn't you be playing at Air Force? ''

That was the run then. If blacks feel threatened, you better believe they will resort to namecalling and try to discourage a white man from horning in on "their" territory. Well, Jacob will keep proving to them that he is something as long as he gets an opportunity. I'd love to see Jacob run through Florida again in the SEC Championship game, but Florida might not make it there. Major Wright is considered the hardest or second hardest hitter on their defense, and Jacob made him look like a gnat.

"What Hester lacks in speed and upside he makes up for in heart and grit. He is a special player and in my opinion every bit in the running with McFadden and Tebow for SEC Player of the Year honors. I say this because there is much football to be played and if Hester continues to pile up stats like he did on Saturday and LSU continues to win, he'll be a near shoe-in.

Let's keep it real--there just aren't many white tailbacks in division one football. That is so because they are slower and generally less effective than their black counterparts. I hope these negative racial comments Hester keeps hearing just motivates him to kick that much more coal black SEC ASS!!!

announcers gave Hester a lot of credit before the game: heart and soul of LSU team, never loses a ball, automatic in converting short downs and getting a TD, can always count on him etc.

Saw this kid play for the first time today vs. Kentucky, and was impressed. Hits the hole well, takes hits, keeps on moving. Certainly looks like he has NFL ability, but I wonder if he'll even get a sniff of the ball at "the next level."

Well, I gotta say that Hester looked more impressive in the florida game, must be because of that early injury. too bad he got hurt, they could definitly have used him on that 4 and 2... gotta love a guy willing to play hurt though.

they are actually giving Hester some credit, saying that every time LSU is in trouble they turn to number 18 and let him look for weaknesses.

just called him a dependable number 1 (RB) and praised his blocking, and, check this out: HIS SPEED! one of the announcers remarked that he has a legitimate 4.5 speed!

they also had a big graphic comparing Hester's 4.5 speed to McFadden's 4.3 speed...

the difference? only 1.8 yards over the length of the field. THAT my friends, is an impressive point of information.
