Early look at 2011 NFL draft

i had the chance to peruse DraftDaddy today for a few minutes, and an interesting name popped up: Washburn University's Joe Hastings. that's aDivision II school , in case you didn't recognize it.

the 6-foot, 185-pound Hastings, who (not surprisingly) didn't draw any interest from "real" football programs coming out of high school, stole the show when he performed at the Kansas State Pro Day back on March 15. i'll post an excerpt of the latest news on him below.

Joe Hastings, an All-America wide receiver for Washburn's football team in the 2010 season, will have a private workout with the San Francisco 49ers at 9 a.m. Monday at WU's Yager Stadium.


Hastings attracted attention from NFL scouts after taking part in the pro day at Kansas State on March 15.


"It went real well,"Â￾ said Hastings, a 6-foot, 185-pounder from Wichita. "I didn't get an official time in my 40 but the low was 4.42 and the high was 4.51.


"I got a lot of good feedback. I've talked to a lot of teams, but this will be my first workout for a team."Â￾


Hastings said he also has had contact with the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks.


Hastings led the MIAA in receiving as a senior with 87 receptions for 1,546 yards, both school records. He had 15 touchdown receptions, averaging 128.8 yards a game and 17.8 yards per reception.


He was second team All-MIAA, third team All-American on the Associated Press Little All-America and Don Hansen Gazette teams and honorable mention on the D2Football.com team.

Hastings, who was a third team Don Hansen Football Gazette team and also took part in the Cactus Bowl Division II all-star game pulling in a touchdown pass also picked up third team Little AP All-American selection. Hastings led the MIAA in receiving yards with 1,546 while recording 87 receptions, both single season records at Washburn. Hastings averaged 128.8 yards per contest and was second in the conference in receptions per game at 7.3. He was fifth in the MIAA in scoring at 7.6 points per game. Nationally, Hastings is second in the nation in receiving yards per game and tied for 20th in receptions per game. He tied a Washburn single-game record with four touchdown receptions against Nebraska-Omaha while playing only the first half of the game. He accounted for 1,575 all purpose yards this season averaging 131.2 per game. He had eight 100-yard receiving games this season including a career-high 223 yards and 10 reception against Midwestern State in the 2010 Kanza Bowl. He was a second team all-MIAA pick as a senior.

guess Kansas State and Kansas didn't have enough room for an athlete like this? What a frickin joke. The recruiting sites have screwed up the whole system. IT seems far too many scouts and coaches believe everything they put out.There is no reason why every ok black athlete is on a D1 roster but guys like Hastings and Olson are ignored.

Seems to be a big increase in draft eligible White safties this year.I hope these deserving athletes are not robbed of being drafted.Another SS/OLB i think has the athleticism,intelligence and production to prove himself at the next level if given the chance is Blake Sorenson who will probably have to drop weight.At 230 he ran in the mid 4.6 range,recorded a vertical just under 36 inches,a 6.81 3 cone and a 1.59 10.His profile on NFL draft scout has a red arrow next to it which supposedly indicates improving draft stock.He most likely wont be drafted but should sign for a team as an UDFA.

I appreciate all the work done detailing safety prospects. Celtic's list looks good. I do think that Dom Decicco and Brett Greenwood would also have a GREAT shot at being drafted in the later rounds in a fair world. Both could work their ways into being decent NFL safeties.

I think Tyler Sash and Chris Prosinski could be the real deal though! Both tested out great athletically. With Sash he was amazingly productive in the tough Big 10 conference and had the knack for the big play. With Conte I'm a little concerned about his 10 yard split. He changes direction well and has good speed, but it takes him a bit longer than you'd like to hit top speed. Conte could probably be a solid starting FS in the NFL though or AT LEAST a good reserve.

Now I wouldn't plug myself as a defensive expert as I'm much more of an expert on RBs, WRs, TEs and FBs, but I think I still have decent analysis of defensive prospects come draft time.

Just following all the "buzz" leading up to the draft...as usual alot of black players are getting these bumps in their stocks right before the draft. Don't be surprised to see a few sure fire white first rounders get knocked down on draft day.

I mentioned Zych as a FCS safety in our Defensive Backs section in the summer before the season. He's a Texas kid who chose to go up to Harvard after being virtually ignored from programs in his area. We have a ton of talented athletes, will they ever be given the chance??

The New England Patriots have a habit of picking up talented, yet ignored white free agents. (Woodhead, Welker, Brady, Connolly). Hopefully, they'll pick up some of them.

This writer can't find room for Jeff Maehl, Danze Sanzenbacher, or Kris Durham inhis top 12 wideouts going into the draft.

Aside from Devin McCourty, Ty Warren, Richard Seymour, Jerod Mayo, and Vince Wilfork"¦the majority of their black draft picks in the first three rounds have been either mediocre players (Ben Watson, Daniel Graham, Eugene Wilson, Adrian Klemm), failed to make the roster or earn a starting position (Shawne Crable, Marquese Hill, Guss Scott), or were outright busts (Lawrence Maroney, Chad Jackson).

However, aside from QB Kevin O' Connell, all of their white draft picks have been either all-world (Mankins), all-pro (Vollmer and Gronkowski), or solid starters (Kaczur).

I've seen the "mock drafts"Â￾ of Turd McGay and sMel K-ker"¦both have the Patriots selecting either JJ Watt or Ryan Kerrigan. Yeah, right.

Sportswriter Wes Bunting of the "National Football Post"Â￾ had these snide and racist remarks regarding Purdue's Ryan Kerrigan"¦ "He gets the stereotypical 'he's white so he's a hard-nosed pass-rusher, blue-collar player and tough against the run.' I just don't think he's that tough against the run and that he'll get blown away in a 4-3 by tackles. In the 3-4, he's going to have to drop (in coverage) and he's too stiff-hipped to get in and out of breaks."Â￾

After passing on dozens of great white college linebackers and defensive ends (especially since Bellichick took the reigns), coupled with the three white defensive players (Mike Wright, Rob Ninkovich, and Dane Fletcher) who should either start or strongly contribute in the 2011-2012 campaign, I'm highly skeptical that the Patriots will add even more white players.

Why draft White players when there is no end of hard-driving, highly motivated, intelligent players like Nick Fairley. Here's another not-so-subtleexample ofwhy the league wastes a dozen or so draft choices each year in the first three rounds on DL players who almost invariably disappoint when they aren't outright busts. Lazy dullards who havetremendous "upside" because they make a nice play now and then fit the profile of what this extremist-driven league desires:

Adam Schefter reported on ESPN's Sports Center Wednesday that Auburn DT Nick Fairley missed his flight to the Combine, missed a team meeting there, and was late for a team interview at his Pro Day. Now the "red flag" picture is coming into sharper focus. Fairley was forced to go the junior college route entering college, had just one dominant season at Auburn, and has faced criticism for taking plays off. While he possesses the talent to go No. 1 overall, Fairley's commitment issues leave him as one of the biggest wildcards in the top half of the draft.

J.C. Sherritt is an interesting prospect. He was a beastly linebacker, and Buck Buchanan Award winner, for Eastern Washington.

In the NFL, draftscout is projecting him as a strong safety, as he's about 5-10 and a little over 200 pounds. I think he does indeed have the athleticism for SS.

Most Buck Buchanan winners get a look from NFL teams,its a prestigious award and Sherritts 10 split,3 cone and bench press are amongst the best for his position.

i honestly can NOT believe how dumb and arrogant and self hurting some of these fools are. do they not have anyone in their surroundings that can give them decent advice? it's for the best, gives more real student athletes a shot.

Mike O'Connellsplit time most the season because in the first game he broke his hand and played the whole year in a cast with 3 pins in his thumb. His pro day was amazing it would have averaged out to be the number 1 safety at the combine.
This kid is totally legit and if the draft passes him by I think he will make noise some where as a free agent.

hey you know whats funny is that even though jovon hayes was the biggest and fattest o lineman in Los Angeles at that Nike camp he also was awarded the best lineman and all the scouts said that he had great foot work and showed the most athletic ability at the camp. know one could get passed him on pass rush and he showed great leadership. he was first in line at every drill and he was a hard worker. Also was the top Guard in California before he got hurt. Also at his pro day he ran a 5.16 and his ten yard split was a 1.72 and he only gave up one sack last year. So by those stats it seems like he disproves that black olineman or slower and non athletic. Race does not matter if you are going to be a good olineman. Only things that matters is being tough, working hard, having good footwork and wanting to out work your opponent. The issue isn't whether a hard working, good character&amp; performing black lineman is justified as a high round draft pick, ratherthat anequallyhigh performing, good character and better upside white players is systematically disenfranchised and stereotyped as inferior due to his race.

I was going to put this on the Cam thread but put it on here instead. My endorsement of Jake Locker as the top qb of this draft.

I understand the agenda the MSM has for pushing Newton. What I don't get
is why the "experts' have Gabbert ranked so high and Locker has dropped so far. (Some scouts
have Gabbert higher than Newton, and some have him right behind Newton).
Watching Gabbert, he has all the physical tools, he is smart, but he
isn't in the THE top as far as quarterbacks are concerned after watching
him play. He is better than Newton of course, but is still raw, he hasn't put it all together watching him play. Locker
is 10x the qb that either of these guys are. I wonder if they are hyping
up Gabbert in hopes of having a white qb to rag on when Newton busts.
It sounds like a conspiracy but I can see it now when people mention
Newton, if Gabbert goes in the top 10 as well, his name will be
mentioned along with Newton if he isn't a superstar.



Locker is the TRUE definition of a "mobile" quarterback, which gets
confused with "running" quarterback. Locker can run and gain yards with
his feet, but I have seen countless plays where he is pressured,
scrambles around with his feet, looking to PASS. I have seen Newton do
this ONCE, which was against Alabama for the winning touchdown. Every
other time Newton scrambles he just runs, he isn't looking to pass. When
its a passing play he pretty much stands still in the pocket, from the
games I have watched. Locker is always moving around the pocket, kind of
like Aaron Rodgers, Locker actually has the so called rocket arm that
the scouts drooled over with Russel, except he has accuracy. His numbers
don't look great but watching his games, tons of dropped passes, more
than usual from the affletes at Washington.



Gabbert has the tools, mobility, arm and the brains to be an elite qb
but at this point I would put Locker and Mallet ahead of him. That
doesn't mean Gabbert won't be a success, just that he is more raw as a
prospect and will need time to sit and develop to reach his full potential, which
1st round white quarterbacks don't get anymore. I mean they bring up
Locker's stats and his completion ratio being under 60 percent, so was
Matt Ryan's, and Ryan also threw a bunch of picks his last year. Both had no talent surrounding them. Washington went 0-9
when Locker was out. He led them to the Holiday Bowl and won against
Nebraska who has a good defense.



Strange that the number 1 ranked qb from a year ago has dropped and they
have talked about him possibly being a safety. Really? He does play physical but come on. I just hope he
gets a chance to earn a starting job somewhere, because he is the top qb
of this draft.It just happened to coincide with the fact that a running qb in Cam Newton managed to fall on a team with a great coordinator and is turning pro. I wonder if Andrew Luck (supposedly would be the number 1 pick this year if he came out) is downgraded next year when some afflete qb has a one hit wonder season.

There are a lot of running highlights on there, but its amazing to see him throw, especially on the run. I have no doubt he wouldve put up better stats than Newton in Auburn's offense, but Washington's offense wasn't as gimmicky.

1. Locker
2. Mallet
3. Gabbert

Locker has outperformed Newton in every single post season event, except the 40, where they both ran a 4.59. Newton missed 10 passes at his pro day, Locker missed 2, both 50+ yard attempts. Despite this, I have seen Locker fall in the expert's "mocks" while Newton rises. Mayock originally had Locker ahead of Newton, and after all of the combine/pro day post season stuff, downgraded Locker and put Newton ahead.



As far as black linemen, yes they have a few good ones, but they just don't have enough naturally big, athletic, strong black guys compared to whites. There are tons of whites that are big, that aren't carrying a ton of fat and are deserving of being picked high, but are constantly downgraded. I mean look at the Saints, Zach Strief who was a 7th round pick from Northwestern has proven he can start at LT and RT and excel, but has never gotten a chance except for injuries to other players. Jermon Bushrod was given like 4 years to develop and given Zach's spot after Zach proved he was better. This year is the first time I have seen an afflete lineman that isn't a sumo being hyped up, Tyron Smith, he is considered the top tackle, yet I just don't see it. He was undersized (280 when he came out), nobody knows how he will play with the added weight he put on this offseason. I would put him behind Nate Solder, who is tall, athletic ( I would consider more athletic than Smith, he was a former basketball player and tight end).

Wow just wow. Todd McGay thinks Ryan Kerrigan is the most overrated Defensive Players in this years class. He used the caste speak"not athletic enough to play in 3-4" "solid player but nothing spectacular"To top it off Mel Kiper picks Brooks Reed as his most overrated player. f**k them!! That is just ridiculous, the media clearly is unhappy at the recent upsurge in white defensive linemen.

How bout Phil Taylor as the most overrated? His fatass has bones growing together in his feet that cannot be corrected through surgery. He's overweight and has health problems, but somehow he has more upside than two fit studs in Reed and Kerrigan. Unbelievable.

Who cares what either dingleberry has to say. All that matters is that Ryan Kerrigan and Brooks Reed go to the right teams that will play them. If and when they do, we all know that they will be studs!
