O'CONNOR SPLITS GLOVE IN WINNING PERFORMANCE

Press Release: Last weekend in Canada, Danny O'Connor's glove split after he pounded pro-debuting Greg Jimenez's body with hook shots en route to a four-round unanimous decision at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

The 23-year-old O'Connor (3-0, 1 KO) will remember hitting his opponent so hard that his glove literally split. "I don't know what happened and nobody there had seen anything like it," O'Connor explained. "I hit him with a clean body shot and the stuffing and padding started coming out. They had to stop the fight, cut-off my gloves, and put on a new pair. It had to be a 7-minute ordeal."

"Danny had been hitting him with some really effective body shots and after one good shot in the third round," O'Connor's head trainer and co-manager David Keefe added, "his glove split open and the fight had to be stopped. He had the kid hurt but never put him away because of the long break."

O'Connor won on all three judges' scorecards - 40-36, 40-36, 40-34and will make his first ESPN Friday Night Fights appearance in the opening bout on February 27th.

"I had a great time in Canada," Danny remarked. "It was a very well run show in a great atmosphere. Everybody was nice to me. It was my best performance as a pro. Each fight is a learning experience for me. I fought real well and was relaxed during the entire fight. I felt so good I could have easily fought six rounds.

"Fighting on ESPN means a lot to me, not just because it's national television, but so many of my fans haven't been able to watch me fight. Now, they won't have to wait until they read about my fight the next day. They can watch with their own eyes. I'm very excited to showcase my tools on ESPN to a lot of people who've never seen me fight before."

O'Connor, fighting out of Framingham (MA), won last year's US Future Stars National Championship, in which he was named Most Outstanding Boxer, as well as the 2008 National Golden Gloves Tournament. Danny, who signed a promotional contract with Seminole Warriors Boxing, defeated 2008 Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz, of the Dominican Republic, last May as an amateur in a USA-Dominican Republic dual meet.

"We're all very excited about Danny fighting on ESPN," Keefe commented. "When (co-manager) Rob (Valle) and I wanted to go with a promoter, one of the keys was signing with a promoter who could get Danny expo! sure like this and had a plan that we can work with. (Seminole Warriors Boxing executive director) Leon (Margules) has that plan and getting Danny on ESPN in only his
fourth pro fight is another step towards getting Danny to the top. It's a great marketing tool for a good, young boxer. Fighting in Montreal on that card was a great experience for all of us because we were around Team Urango and saw first-hand what it's like and takes to win a world championship."

And he won via decision. Only 1 KO in 4 fights though.

In the 2nd O'Connor had the guy in all kinds of pain and ready to go with body shots. Should have kept it up, but the laid off for some reason. He reminds me a little of Mickey Ward, another Irish fighter with excellent body punching technique.

20-30 more fights, and he'll be in line for a title shot.

O'Connor won a unanimous decision over Helmes. He fought on the FNF card but his match wasn't televised. With the win, he improves to 8-0(2).

How would you rate his progress Blue Devils? Not knowing a whole lot about boxing i see he only has 2 ko's in 8 fights, so it seems he may lack power.

I haven't seen his last few fights only his televised fight against Saunders and the videos I posted above. But from checking out the scorecards on his fights he has hardly lost a round in his career which is good. In my opinion he doesn't hit that hard with his left hand. His right hook is where he does the most damage.

A fighter he's been drawing comparisons to is Former world champ Paul Spadafora 42-0-1(17) who recently launched a comeback after some legal trouble. As you can tell from Spadafora's record he wasn't a puncher but he had a very slick southpaw style which made him very difficult to hit.

Another young and undefeated light-welterweight is Dean Byrne. Born and reared in Dublin, Byrne started fighting as a pro in Australia. He is now fighting out of Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Hollywood. I've talked with him, have watched him train, and have attended two of his fights. He is extraordinarily quick, moves very well, and his punches sting but at 140 lbs. he, like O'Connor, or most other light welterweights, is not going to have a high percentages of KOs. He has the frame to be a middleweight and should probably be fighting at welterweight but Roach likes to push his fighters down a weight class or two. In Byrne's case it seems a bit much. He must be no more than 5% bodyfat and looks like an anatomy chart.

2008 US Olympic alternate and Framingham, MA native Danny O'Connor (10-0, 3 KOs) out landed and outworked James Hope (4-3, 4 KOs) over six one sided rounds. O'Connor worked the body throughout and by round three, Hope was hopelessly out of gas. All three judges scored the fight 60-54 in favor of O'Connor to keep his perfect record intact.

Good news about O'Connor he's working his way up!

Irish eyes were smiling on Friday night, the day after St. Patrick's Day at the Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, RI as Framingham, MA junior welterweight unbeaten prospect Danny O'Connor (11-0, 3 KOs) scored an eight round unanimous decision over Brooklyn, NY's Franklin Gonzalez (13-4, 9 KOs). All three judges scored the bout a shutout for O'Connor 80-72 on all cards. O'Connor stayed true to his game plan as he worked his jab to perfection, setting up his combinations, while at the same time, keeping Gonzalez off balance and unable to attack. Gonzalez was able to work and counter with his opponent, however O'Connor got the better of almost all the exchanges and consistently out-landed Gonzalez throughout. The seven bout fight card titled "Shamrock'd"Â￾ was promoted by Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment and Sports.
