Tobias Unger is back. He ran a 10.17 to win a race in Germany today with 0.1 wind! So basically he won with no wind and no competition. He killed the field. He has a p.b. in the 200 meters of 20.20 as he made the 200 Olympic Finals back in Athens. He has battled injuries the last couple of years but he appears to be finally back to full health. I really think he can make a run at a sub 20 and maybe even a sub 10! I'm anxious to see what he does the next time out. He needs to get in some bigger meets and race against the big dogs. That will help him to approach 10 and 20 seconds even. Congrats go Unger and here is to a big summer!

Nice to see that he is healthy and back from that potential career ending injury. With a time like that a sub 20 is quite possible.

Here is an article about Unger. It looks like his coach wants him to focus more on the 100 this year most likely. I would love to see if he can get closer to 10 seconds. I'm so glad he is finally healthy because he capable of some incredible times.

Tobias Unger - full steam ahead
Swabia arrow Tobias Unger of the LAZ Salamander grain west home/Ludwigsburg met with its late season entrance in Regensburg on past Sunday at first attempt. With its fast 100-Meter-Zeit of 10.17 seconds it wiped all doubts whether possible injuries of the table and can pack already times its suit-cases. Now it goes to the Europacup to Annecy (France; 21. /22. June) and in August then probably to the Olympic Games to Peking (China), even if it must still supply later the second olympia standard.

Tobias Unger is as fast as never (photo: Kiefner)

After Tobias Ungers refusals of its starts planned in Weinheim and Berlin, arose some doubts regarding its health, but „I wanted to be simply fit and not start again with 90 per cent into the season, as last year or in the winter, where it then always means: What is the matter with Unger? " The fact that then equivalent 10.17 seconds become had not thought the Swabian: „I would have been content also with 10.25 seconds. "

After this first running made to measure prevails a large relief with the fastest German Sprinter: „I know now, what I have drauf and that I can repeat also once again. I think now only of run to run and no more of the time. " The fact that still some is possible is realistic, because „the form is not yet fully there, but I run now rather three times 10.17 seconds and then a fast semi-final in Peking. "

Fit for European competition

Next intermediate stop for Tobias Unger is the Europacup in Annecy, where it can prove whether it is also continentally seen competitive. „In Annecy I run against the best Europeans and not fast struck to give. The Englishmen have strong people there and the Frenchmen probably also again ", describe the Sprinter his competition.

Also over its parade discipline, the 200 meters, itself Tobias Unger of its quality is quite conscious, but „I am really only since a few days again fit and pain-free, forget one fast, if everything runs so well. Therefore it is meaningful, if my coach puts times the bolt forward and lets the reason triumph. "

200 meters in Peking?

To completely check off the resounding European champion does not want this distance of 2005 however. „The standard over 200 meters is actually simpler to run. 20.45 seconds should actually be possible with 10.17 seconds over 100 meters. " It will in any case focus the standard therefore, if its coach permits: „The 200 meters one must still proportion, but two, three running would like I to make, perhaps also with the German championships. "

Is Tobias Unger also with the 200 meters at the start? (Photo: Kiefner)

The focus is appropriate however health conditionally for the time being on the 100 meters and estimates itself there for the Swabian also very strongly: „10.17 seconds, was so fast I never. My Bestzeit, which I ran before three years, is about 10.16 seconds, whereby I had there a meter tail wind. Now I ran in the advance and without wind 10.17 seconds. That was Ausrut no, I will then show with next running. "

High potential in the relay

Also one may not underestimate the German 4x100-Meter-Staffel: „Läuferisch are we super, otherwise we would not have run 38.70 seconds, but we must change in any case still better. " The potential of the relay stresses Tobias Unger however: „I have 10.17 seconds, Aleixo Platini Menga 10.27 seconds ran, then still the 10.29 seconds come of Martin cellar, Alexander Kosenkow run 10.30 seconds and Marius Bröning are still injured, but it already was in training in my range, which can run correctly fast. "

The goals are also here completely clearly put: „If we are läuferisch so strong and well change, then we must run direction German record. I go always optimistically ran, if we do not create it then, we it in any case tried. Eternal hiding brings nothing. "

Pursue the football EM without pressure

Hiding places it does not have itself the Swabian but nevertheless it has a large advantage that it furnished the standard to such an early time. Now he can withdraw himself without bad conscience and pursue also times the football European championship in Austria and Switzerland. The goals of the Sprinters and the soccer player are not so far, because both want to give everything in this summer for Germany and cause a further summer fairy tale, the one on the green, the other one on the red surface.

One frustrating thing for me is that in my opinion, he should have focused on the 100 for the last decade or so. So many coaches in the US and around the world move kids up to the higher distances too early. Even Tim Benjamin of the UK ran a 10.43 when he was a teenager. Who's to say that he couldn't have progressed alot more in the 100 instead of putting him in the 400. Back to Unger. He runs these times with ease and he can run a little faster but he has to retrain his body. I hope he sticks with it and they give up on the 200 for now. It's too bad they made the switch in his late 20's but better late than never. Let's see what he can do next weekend at the German Olympic Selection Trials!

Tobias won the 100 finals in the German Champs today in a time of 10.20! He has been consistant this year running times of 10.17, 10.22, and 10.20 today. While those are quality times, he will still have to get alot faster if he is to make the finals in China. It was a slightly negative wind today however and his start could have been better. Regardless, congrats to Unger on a fine season thus far coming off the major injuries of the last couple of years.

Martin Keller finished 3rd and he has a p.b. of 10.23 already this year. Not bad for a young guy.

Tobias Unger runs the 100 meters tommorow in Monaco. He is in against a high quality field. If the conditions are descent, I could see him lowering his p.b. In fact I will predict that he runs around a 10.10 tommorow. The meet will be shown on WCSN.com for anyone with a subscription. I do subscribe there and it's only $5 dollars a month to watch track meets live. It's even cheaper if you subscribe for a year but I only do it month to month as needed. The quality of the video is amazing as well and you can rewatch the meets as much as you want.

Any predictions from you guys on Ungers time for tommorow? He is due for a new personal best!Edited by: white lightning

being that he almost ran a PB this year after a 2 1/2 year layoff, I'm going to say 10.11. if he does that today, I think he'll set another PB in the Olympics. I think he is our best 100m guy for making the final in the Olympics, though I don't count Yelpshin or Pickering out. and even though Pickering has been running like crap, I think we will see him set a PB at the Olympics. is Unger running the 200 in the olympics?

10.27 Wake up guys. All good white sprinters that run 10.1 never run it again in the season outside of Shirvo.

Yeah, Pickering needs to ease up, not over train. That's what's great about Wariner, he's patient and deliberate.

Macro, Nagel and Shirvo all fell to injuries. Shirvo was a wind adjusted sub 10 when he was 19. Then he way over trained.

Pickering ran in the 10.1 range two or three times last season so I guess he doesn't count. Rob3783 needs to do his homework before he posts about Shirvo being the only one capable of running multiple 10.1 times.

Jared Connaugton, Paul Hession, Tobias Unger, Craig Pickering, Simone Collio,Fabio Cerutti, and Matic Osovnkar all can run multiple times in that range when healthy.

Unger is slated to only run the open 100 in the olympics and the relay. He will not compete in the 200 despite making the 200 Olympic Finals in Athens, Greece back in 2004! Edited by: white lightning

here's a reminder of why Matt could run 10.10 or under when fully fit and
healthy. He was so powerful.

This "youtube" shows him back with a slightly negative wind 10.11 after a
season of glandular fever and injury. And the competition on the day was
a bit lacklustre with none of the rest of the field near their PBs so he ran it
alone. I think he ran better that way actually.
Yet another occasion where a good legal wind could have dipped him
under the 10.00 mark but it wasn't to be

Just heard that Tobias ran 10.18 into a -2.5 wind at the German Championships.
Wow - that's really fantastic, and unexpected.

What would that convert to? It's got to be close to 10 seconds for sure. Does anyone have a wind conversion table/calculator. Way to go Unger!

Ok here is a link to a short briefing of todays results. Some other eye popping results are my secret girlfriend, Verena Sailor running a p.b. of 11.18! Also the main man Sebastian Beyer jumping a very nice 8.49 meters! Wow. Here is a link to the results. It's really too bad about the wind because as we always say, if you turn the wind around, what kind of time would Unger be looking at? It is just so hard for our guys to catch a break. Regardless, Unger ran the A Qualifying time for Berlin in the 100 meters! I would say that this race was as good as Guliyev's.

I did read that a 1 meterr a second wind makes for a sprinter 6.6 around hundreds of a second or like a 0.1 second difference for 1.5 meter so Tobias Unger 10.18 -2.5 would be like 10.01-10.02 with no wind.very very great from Tobias Unger. But why is their never a good wind (+1-2 m/s)when a whitey races his race of his live.

Germany is really putting on the pressure. I hope their relay team medals and Unger can by some miracle make the finals of the 100. What a way to go out. He's already made countless finals in the WC and Olympics in the 200.

This year is in my opinion the first year white man will make the finals. It feels special.

that would be a 10.01 with zero wind and a 9.91 with +2.0 wind. Edited by: albinosprint
