I wonder why so many big shot Argentine forwards, other than Messi, did not take penalties. Even Tevez's winner was the sixth. I always lose respect for forwards who chicken out of taking penalties thus leaving the task to their defenders.

higuain missed many penalties this season in napoli
i prefer that the one who is the best at taking the penalties takes it
messi scored another important one for argentina, the first one
he only missed the one against chelsea some time ago, otherwise he has scored all the important ones i think
but when he missed against chelsea many including me and rebajlo i remember thought that a defender should have taken the penalty if he was better than messi at scoring those important penalties

I just looked it up and it turns out Angel Di Maria was substituted with a couple of minutes to go. Lavezzi, who scored a penalty, replaced him. I must have been distracted as I didn't notice Di Maria going off. Tevez, though, should've taken one of the first five. He used to take them for Man City but then he missed a couple about four years ago and that seemed to hurt his confidence from the spot.

I laughed at the referee. He gave yellow cards to every player who questioned one of his decisions. The James Rodriquez reaction was funny.

For some reason this relatively new thread has had 53900 views. Looking at how many views other threads have got I don't think that can be right.

yes it's strange, like the premier league thread and some other ones (the serie a thread went from 160 something to 10 000 + in a week or so

meanwhile paraguay kicks brazil out, pathetic match by the brazilians, complete with a big mistake by thiago silva
everything goes perfect in this competition

Silva did the same thing against Chelsea:

The black Brazilian goalie, Jefferson - how'd he get that name? - looked dodgy in the first half. He was too casual on a back-pass and he also totally misjudged the bounce of a ball but got away with it.

So Argentina v. Paraguay for the championship? I assume Argentina is the whiter team?

Yes, Argentina are whiter but they are only playing Paraguay in the semi-final. Paraguay look a bit whiter than Chile who, as I type this, lead Peru 2-1 in the first semi-final match. Peru are the only team left with blacks in their squad. All the remaining teams are talented and entertaining to watch no matter what their ethnic makeup.

the final will be argentina-chile
the big story so far is how good pastore (PSG player) can be
he is something special, not many players can bring what he brings in a team
he was under-estimated in france

I wouldn't be surprised to see Chile get a 'surprise' penalty or offside decision. They've had some refereeing benefits in this tournament. Nevertheless, Chile and Argentina along with with eliminated Columbia were the best South American teams at last year's World Cup so a Chile v Argentina final is appropriate.

ok, a gifted penalty, so that makes it 3-1 for argentina :thumb:

about the world cup we can also see that more south american countries should qualify, because paraguay and peru went at least to the semi finals of the copa america 2 times in a row yet couldn't qualify to the last world cup

Higuain's chance at the end of 90 minutes wasn't as terrible as his World Cup final miss but I think he still should've scored.

Poor Messi. The Pele fanboys will use this against him. They'll say he can't win for his country.

And Higuain...

Incidentally, Alexis Sanchez, who appears to be mixed race, has had a very good tournament. He has shown great skills in numerous matches. Arsenal are lucky to have him.

Ruud Gullit just said that even though Messi has not won anything with Argentina, based on everything he's seen, Messi is still probably the best player of all time. Obnoxious loudmouthed Scotsman Andy Gray - a former Sky Sports EPL sycophant until he was fired for political incorrectness - said if Maradona led Argentina they would've won tonight.

about the refereeing chile was still helped, when medel shot messi in the stomach very obviously he should have been red carded, it's not like he hasn't a reputation for that
messi was fouled a lot i think in this game

about higuain, there is no question about the fact that he is one of the best strikers in the world, he has big numbers in every club and with his national team, and plays well, but like many argentines he is not very good at penalties (he also missed an important one with napoli this season, he was very good in the game otherwise)
