The Eagles' John Runyan was a scholarship prospect at Michigan for basketball before he chose to play football.

Thats a cool fact about Runyan Philly Birds. Staley is one hell of an athlete with his size didn't he run a 4.9 40? Thats really movin! Another guy is Browns tackle Joe Thomas another lean 6'7 320 pound guy who also ran a 5.00 flat 40 i think, not to mention his great pro agility time!

Gotta give Dr. Z of SI some credit. His midseason All Pro team is all white on the o-line, which takes a bit of courage in this age of relentless Caste enforcement by the media. Instead of selecting the same old over-rated over-the-hill sumos, Dr. Z's team has Jordan Gross (Panthers), Michael Roos (Titans), and Marc Colombo (Cowboys) at tackle; Pete Kendall (Redskins) and Chris Snee (Giants) at guard; and Ryan Kalil (Panthers) and Nick Mangold (Jets) at center.

Actually, Marc Colombo is now the RT for the Cowboys.
Jon Tait is the Bears RT. However, since the Bears are in love with sumos, I'm sure they'll draft another forgettable black fatty to replace Tait soon enough.

Jonas Jennings is out for the season.
Orlando Pace might just be out for the season.

This is the year of the injured sumo. This trend will likely continue.
Using high draft picks on sumos is very risky (Mike Williams, anyone?). Ryan Sims, also taken in 2002, is a good example. Then there's Bryant McKinnie, taken right after Sims' at #7!
Wasted picks!! Buffalo took Mike Williams. Kansas City took Sims. Minnesota took McKinnie.
Those atrocious picks definitely set back Buffalo and Kansas City!
On average, I would say that sumos have a 10 year NFL life-span. This, of course, doesn't stop teams from trying to get 12 and 13 years out of their broken-bodied athletes. The QB's health be damned...
Of course, the "athletes" will play a few extra years and take the fat paycheck, but they'll be awful on the field and get their "mates" injured.

The Ultimate Bust: How NFL Drafting has somewhat Changed post-Mike Williams
Michael D. Williams (born January 11, 1980 in Dallas, Texas) is a former American football offensive tackle in the National Football League. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills out of the University of Texas with the fourth overall pick of the 2002 NFL Draft. Weighing 360 lbs, Williams seemed destined to be the anchor of the AFC's heaviest offense. But, in hindsight, many observers now consider the Tom Donahoe's decision to draft Williams to be one of his biggest mistakes as Bills GM.
While he provided fair run blocking on the right side, Williams failed to show a flair for pass blocking and remained an unpolished player. Due to continued woes on the Bills' offensive line, Williams was moved by the coaching staff to left guard in order to assess his talents on the inside of the line. This tryout, though, was cut short by Williams' semi-frequent injuries.
After the 2005 season, Williams was cut. He signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on March 14, 2006 but was placed on injured reserve on August 29, ending his season.
EDIT: From Wikipedia. Deleted link because it wouldn't work. |
I watched the 2002 Draft, but can anyone answer this question. I'm pretty sure that the talking-heads were together in saying - "this was a good pic!" I think they were pushing the "big = good" Caste line.
Onto the question... We know Kiper's an idiot and I believe Mike Williams was very high on his board. Does anyone know exactly where Mike Williams' was on Kiper's "best available" list that they show during the Draft? Top 10 would be my guess.
I wasn't really thinking about "race and sports" back then or I would have taken notes. I also wasn't "in awe" of the superhumans flashing before my eyes. Even if one is not totally awake, it's still possible to see the charade and artificialness.
________________________________________________________
The NFL will still draft 350+ pounders, but there is a tendency to pick them lower these days.
If guys like Andre Smith (Alabama), Phil Loadholt and Duke Robinson (both Oklahoma) are drafted particularly high, they'll be good potential bust candidates.
Michael Oher may have slimmed down, but if he goes to St. Louis or Oakland or Seattle or Cincinnati, that team might not really be better. Eugene Monroe (Virginia) is not a "game-changing" OT, but still might be a 1st or early 2nd pick.
There should be a number of Joe Thomas/Jake Long-prototypes in the next few draft classes -- Lee Ziemba (might be a natural RT), Carimi, Bulaga, Hix, Kyle Jolly, etc.
I think some college programs have finally realized the importance of providing protection for the QB, which is why I'm seeing some lower-rated Whites starting over the higher-rated "stud athletes" (according to Rivals). That development makes me feel good. Why bring in these slugs in the first place? If the starters happen to get injured, these slugs will get EXPOSED. I'm sure the "team fans" would love that...
If teams want first-rate QB's, they need to provide a first-rate line! Make's sense right?

News and notes:
1) The Outland Trophy finalists are Michael Oher, Duke Robinson and Andre Smith.
They are definitely trying to give a certain impression, but how many White lineman are going to have better NFL careers compared to super-obese Andre Smith (in particular)? The answer is several.
2) Super-obese Jeff Otah walks like he's 60 years old. He could very well turn out to be a wasted pick by the Carolina Panthers. No longevity.
3) Marcus McNeil was his terrible self against Indy! He face-masked Dwight Freeney a couple times, but it wasn't called. Just another statue (tall & stiff). Did you guys see him getting absolutely-manhandled on a bull rush? Super-strength?! The best height for an OT is 6-4 to 6-6. These statues routinely get embarrassed by 6-1 and 6-2 DE's -- and they tend to be awkward and inefficient when run-blocking.
Jon Stinchcomb is a beast of a run-blocker. He's an athletic freak. So quick.
4) Iowa Running Back, Shonn Greene, is a finalist for the Doak Walker.
You guessed it... Iowa has an ALL-White line! This line includes super-athletic sophomore, Bryan Bulaga, at left tackle and a junior, Kyle Calloway, at right tackle.
Knowshon Moreno is also a finalist. He has super-athletic sophomore, Clint Boling, as a guard. Center - Chris Davis - has been impressive as well.
Will some of these White athletes be award finalists in a year or two?? Or will their skin be deemed a tad too light?
Oregon State's left tackle, Andy Levitre (Senior), is very good. Oregon has Max Unger (Senior).
LSU's sumo lines (OL/DL) have been terrible!
If anyone has more sumo news, please report it!

Thanks for the post Colonel.
They look deranged in the picture you posted, and I think that was the intention. Because, in the article, they are going the "human interest story" route -- "People are scared of us but they shouldn't be because we have big hearts."
That's fine and dandy, but the article seemed to be largely pointless. Maybe it's a good thing that they only talked about blacks - because, as we know, White lineman tend to be leaner.
White lineman are often times taller than black lineman. Guys like Jon Runyan, Joe Thomas, Jake Long, Michael Roos and Robert Gallery aren't exactly midgets. Also, look at the physical specimens in World's strongest man.

The sumo fetish continues unabated, as all of the o-linemen on AP's 2008 All-American team are black -- tackles Andre Smith of Alabama and Michael Oher of Mississippi; guards Duke Robinson of Oklahoma and Herman Johnson of LSU; and center Antoine Caldwell of Alabama.

Just 5 more players that will get drafted 1st round, have a few good years, then suck and contribute to a perennial bad offensive line year after year while their white teammates take all the blame. I can't wait

Now they want to make the offensive line as black as the defensive line. Offensive line especially should be about 85 percent white. All the top colleges want to draft sumos lately.

It will be interesting to see when the first jock sniffer slips up and mentions the blubbery appearance of one of the countless sumos now playing in the NFL. From preschoolers to allegedly mature middle-aged citizens, our society has long held a strong penchant for the derisive "fat" term. This penchant is particularly strong today (just listen to any talk radio show).
That being said, these same obnoxious folks also have developed a powerful aversion to offending black people. So, because almost all the sumos in the NFL are black, it is likely to be one of the handful of white sumos who becomes the target of some jock-sniffer's nasty comments.
It would seem to be inevitable; all public figures have their physical appearance scrutinized down to the smallest detail, by those who are paid to babble about such things. Considering how far from "athletic" these sumos appear, I suspect some jock-sniffer will inadvertently mention the lack of clothes on this jiggling, flabby emperor someday.
It really is incredible that any of them can keep a straight face when they call these giant tubs of lards "athletes." I honestly believe that most middle- aged executives are in better shape.

Well, I'm built like a OL at 6'8 (320 right now). However, I have a very large frame (18EEE shoes, size 17 ring). A few years ago, I measured my arm diameter (at the gym), I was holding 16" forearms & 20" arms (cold)...my wrist is pretty large too (I think it was 9-10"). My bf% is probably between 18-21% right now, whereas it was 12-15% when I played football & probably 12% during basketball season. I'm not "sumo" status, but not trim either!
Anyway, check out All-SEC Freshman teamer Ben Jones (OL, UGA). This is highlights of him dominating black 4-5 star DLs during summer camp (before coming to UGA)...

6 of the top 9 Scout.com QBs were black as of the last time I checked even though QB for the most part is still a white dominated position.
But Rivals bothers me far more: Since we are talking o-line I will tell you that 4 of Rivals.com's top 5 offensive tackles are black and 4 of the top 5 guards are black or mixed race. Rivals is even pushing to make Center a black position. 3 of the top 5 Rivals Centers appear to be black, mixed race or non-white this year.
The accomplishments of white o-lines in the NFL of late doesn't matter. (Dr. Z's all white NFL all-pro offensive line team means nothing to BlackpowerRivals.com; the extinction of white scholarships means everything!)
These sites will continue to push for an even blacker NFL and for the extinction of white scholarships in football.

well, i just recenty started watching football again, the whole Aaron Brooks/Jake Delhomme fiasco in New Orleans had me turn off the tv for football for years until we got a new coach. I didn't realize there was a caste system until upon watching it after a while in 2008. The point being is, how long has this resurgence of Whites at the Oline position been happening? that guy Tom Lemming that commented on a few White runningbacks i read about was talking about how when something becomes popular at an NFL level, it takes about 5 years for the high schools to start cranking them out, ie small speedy receivers are popular in the nfl then it takes about 5 years to start seeing small speedy receivers at the lower levels. Then tall lanky receivers are popular then it takes about 5 years to start seeing that pop up at the high school level.
So, hopefully the White Olinemen thing is a trend that will start becoming more popular, along with White receivers, but that is just hope. As for right now that is just wishful thinking. When will they stop cranking out crappy black qb's when its no longer in trend? The only one that has put up any kind of success is Mcnabb and even that has been erratic.
I just don't get it though. you know that alot of White talent is there in high schools somewhere, they just aren't being recruited as heavily by the major colleges, I mean Jared Allen went to Idaho State which doesn't seem right. Kevin Curtis played at Utah State...

Just have a look at Scout.com's highest rated OT's and OG's they have for the draft.
OT's
Michael Oher SR 6-5/318 lbs.
Andre Smith JR ; 6-4/348 lbs.
Eugene Monroe SR &nbs p; 6-6/315 lbs.
Jason Smith SR ; 6-5/270 lbs.
Eben Britton JR &nb sp; 6-6/310 lbs. (white)
Phil Loadholt SR &n bsp; 6-8/350 lbs.
OG's
Duke Robinson SR &n bsp; 6-5/330 lbs.
Herman Johnson SR &nb sp; 6-7/386 lbs.
Trevor Canfield SR &n bsp; 6-5/305 lbs. (white)
Andy Levitre SR &nb sp; 6-3/326 lbs. (white)
Kraig Urbik SR ; 6-6/328 lbs. (white)
As you can see, the black sumos for outnumber the 4 white linemen on this list. The white linemen that are heavy however look to have almost no fat on them. It is shocking, but not surprising, that Michael Oher and Andre Smith could possibly go in the top 5.
