(10/20/04) San Diego was the only team in the NFL to draft a majority of white players in 2004, and that is reflected in an improvement in the number of white players on the roster, up from 16 in 2003 to 19 this year, one of the better ratios by NFL standards.
Like last year there are six white starters. QB Drew Brees, who was already buried by the media despite having little to work with the past two years, has been very good so far in 2004. He is accurate and is very bright and has a keen grasp of what he is doing on the field. His arm strength and speed aren’t much, which only shows again how over-rated those attributes can be, especially at the quarterback position.
First round ’04 draft pick Philip Rivers backs up Brees, along with the ageless Doug Flutie. The Chargers for some reason also have a fourth quarterback, a black named Cleo Lemon.
Justin Peele and Ryan Krausse are backup tight ends. Krausse, a rookie, was a standout college wide receiver with great height. However, in the NFL those guys are always converted into tight ends when they’re white, as only David Boston, Terrell Owens and other blacks are allowed to be large-sized WRs.
On the o-line, Jason Ball, until recently a rare white holdout in the NFL, is the starting center, joined by right guard Mike Goff and rookie right tackle Shane Olivea.
Tim Dwight is a receiver but is used almost exclusively to return kickoffs. Dwight had a standout second half of the 1999 season when he was used as the Falcons’ number two receiver but has never been used as a receiving deep threat on a regular basis since. For some reason the Chargers, when they’ve played Dwight at all, have used him as a possession receiver. Dwight has also been regularly hampered by an array of nagging injuries.
On defense, rookie second rounder Igor Olshansky, the native of Ukraine who is incredibly strong and quick but only began playing football a few years ago, is already starting at right end. Jason Fisk has been demoted to the backup nose tackle this year but still plays quite a bit.
Ben Leber is the starting left outside linebacker. Promising rookie Matt Wilhelm is currently a backup right outside LB. Fourth year man Zeke Moreno, who looks white but may be of mixed white/Mexican background (and it’s the system’s definition that anyone who has even a drop of non-white blood isn’t white, not ours), is a backup inside linebacker.
