Caste Football Looks at the Dallas Cowboys

(10/21/04) Although it doesn’t show up in the number of starters, Bill Parcells continues to clean house and by doing so the Cowboys have 20 white players on their roster this season, double the number present when Parcells became head coach two years ago and more than the Cowboys have had in a long time.

Parcells raised eyebrows in the preseason by summarily waiving ’03 black starting QB Quincy Carter. Carter allegedly failed a drug test, but it was obvious that Parcells didn’t want him as his starter. 40-year-old Vinny Testaverde was made the starter, and he is doing well so far. He is backed up by Tony Romo and the quarterback of the near future, Drew Henson.

Al Johnson is the starting center, and second year man Jason Witten is the starting tight end. Witten is an excellent pass receiver and is an integral part of the offense.

There are no white starters on defense, but a fair number of white backups are now on the roster, including tackles Chris Cooper and Chad Eaton, linebackers Ryan Fowler, Keith O’Neil and Scott Shanle, and safety Lynn Scott.

Parcells is certainly not a head coach for a Caste Football supporter to get excited about. Going back 20 years to his stint with the Giants, Parcells has little use for white receivers and fullbacks, but he obviously didn’t like the nearly all-black roster of losers he inherited with Dallas. When Parcells is done tinkering with the team, it’ll still have a white starting QB and TE, probably 2-4 white starting o-linemen, and one or two white starters on defense, nothing special but an improvement over the coal black era of recent years.
