(9/16/05) Is it LSU or is it the Miami Dolphins? New head coach Nick Saban undoubtedly feels right at home as white players in South Florida are as few and far between as they were back in Louisiana.
Three of the Miami’s tiny white contingent are found at quarterback, where 12th year journeyman Gus Frerotte began the 2005 season as the starter. Given that all three QBs are white, however, it would not be surprising if Saban plays musical chairs at the position all season long, with A. J. Feeley and Sage Rosenfels also shuffled in and out in a way guaranteed to keep their confidence at a minimum before Saban drafts Vince Young in 2006.
Heath Evans was a fine runner at Auburn when given the chance, but as the Dolphins’ starting fullback will do little more than block.
Many football fans don’t realize how much blacker the offensive line is getting in the NFL. The Dolphins are a harbinger of things to come — center Seth McKinney is the only starter on the line and tackle Joe Berger is the only white backup.
Will Heller is a rarely used backup tight end.
The only bright spot on the team is Wes Welker, the excellent kick returner who is also apparently going to play some this season as Miami’s third or fourth wide receiver.
On defense, the great Zach Thomas is now in his 10th season, and given his hard-nosed playing style at inside linebacker most likely doesn’t have a lot of gas left in the tank.
Backup nose tackle Jeff Zgonina is in his 13th season. Rookie second round draft pick Matt Roth, a pass-rushing end, may be the only white defensive player on the roster in a year or two.
